April 2025 Player of the Month Vote

Here we go: 15 contenders - as per usual, vote for the player, pair, team you think deserves to be our player of the month and tell us when you vote and why (to keep it interesting for others).

Vote will be closed 10 pm Tuesday night, 29th April. If there is a tie for top spot, there will be a tie break vote to determine the winner. Top 2, or top 2 and ties, will receive places in the end of season Player Of the Season vote.

Here are the 15:

1 Hannah Klugman - for winning the J300 in Croatia on Clay! followed it up by being RU in the U18 Nationals Girls Singles

2. North-West England Juniors - there have been three 'new' players at the 16U nationals who have really caught my eye and impressed - Aran Selvaraasan, April Sackflame and Annabel Wong - Aran in the final, April only 2012-born and Annabel who really tested Meg. AND - from what I can see - Aran is in Manchester, April is Bolton, and Annabel is Bramhall Lane, Stockport. So a tight little group. Huge well done to junior tennis up in the Manchester - great dynamic up there !!!!

3. Aran Selvaraasan - aged 14, coming through qualies, he won the 16U Nationals title. Fantastic, breakthrough performance

4. Megan Knight - aged 14, showed her talent by taking the 16U national title, now has the chance to build on it in the 18U event; also, won the doubles title, convincingly, for a well deserved double title week. Followed all of that by taking the J200 title in Aldershot for her first title at that level and entry into the JWR top 200 as a result, and will become the top ranked 2011 born girl in the world rankings on Monday

5. Hermione Korpanec Davies - age 13 - won the singles title in J30 Ghana, beating the second seed. Only born on 25 Oct. 2011 - so only 13 1/2 - one of the youngest ever winners, in GB, and in the world

6. Julian Cash/Lloyd Glasspool - for reaching the Monte Carlo Masters final, beating world number ones Arevalo and Pavic in the semis, their second M1000 final as a pair, and second straight Masters final.

7. Team GB BJK Cup Team- for making the finals in the BJK Cup

8. Sonay Kartal - for winning both her singles in her first matches played in the BJK Cup

9. Sofia Tatu (age 13) - our new champion dirt-baller ! For winning the U14 Super Category, Portugal - her age group equivalent of W1000s. And in a really gutsy match too.

10. Hollie Smart (age 15) - for winning the under 16 and 18 LTA National Doubles titles in back to back weeks

11. Mika Stojsavljevic - for winning the 18 and under girls Nationals

12. Oli Bonding - for winning the 18 and under boys Nationals

13. Luke Johnson - for winning his first ATP 500 title in Barcelona (with Sander Arends) and reaching a new career high of 40.

14. Charlie Robertson - playing clutch tennis in the run to the end of the season after a difficult start to his college career. Won his match in the regular season title decider against NC State that was the winning point to clinch the title for Wake Forest. And was the only one of his side to win a first set in the ACC Championships semi-final. Winning his last 8 completed singles matches and is 13-1 in doubles, he has won the Atlantic Coast Conference (regarded as the strongest men's conference this year) Freshman of the week twice this month. Ranked ITA 125 in singles and 6 (with DK Suresh) and 25 (with Dostanic) in doubles. Also voted to the ACC All-Conference 1st Team for doubles.

15. Alicia Dudeney - for a very strong end to her college career (probably the end), finishing on an 11 match win streak in singles, which is no mean feat in the loaded women's Southeastern conference. She did this in the context of Florida women's programme having their most difficult season ever with multiple injuries and a short roster. When the rest of her team were struggling she led by example being relied upon to win her matches. Ranked 53 in singles (after being outside the top 125 at the beginning of March) and 13 and 22 in doubles she has been voted to receive SEC All-Conference 1st Team honours.

I genuinely struggled to decide this month, but have eventually plumped for Megan Knight - not only winning the under 16 title at age 14, but also taking her first J200 title in Aldershot a couple of weeks later, and becoming the world top ranked 2011 born girl.

Its not often I vote for juniors, but Megans performance stand out this month.

I made my mind up a while ago. I so enjoyed watching Sonay in the BJK Cup - her attitude, play and joy in winning.
Plenty of other good achievements, I know, but my vote goes to her.

For me Sonay's performances got us through the BJK cup, as a novice. And she has reached a live ranking of 55 after winning a round at Madrid. So she gets my vote.

I voted Megan! Seemed a standout month and best in the world at her age! Very impressive.

Thanks for the comments so far, it really does help as it keeps the thread active and draws others to it - and makes it more interesting!

10 early votes in so far; long way to go!

Not the strongest of months for me more particularly for senior singles which is my main interest. However, we did have Sonay in the BJK Cup. She made the most impact on me this month, and is my PoM.

Charlie and Alicia have clearly done very well but college tennis is not my thing at all. So, sorry guys but well done.

I promised Indy I won't fixate on voting numbers anymore and I won't - but just worthy of note was last April we got our record ever voting numbers when 59 people voted, never achieved before and never matched since. We had a few big votes around then, for reasons I know not, and doubt we will get anywhere near that going forwards (as we aren't getting new members to the board and inevitable lose a few for whatever natural reasons) but that was a big month to remember! April 2024, when Mika and Emma tied for PoM. Emma had carried the team in the BJK Cup and Mika had won her first ever ITF W35 title in Nottingham.

 Thanks Indy, yes Sonay did well in the BJK Cup and made a big wider impact outside tennis as well.

I do not follow juniors and I have no idea what J100, J200, JXXX are but Megan Knight's achievements are pretty impressive for one so young so she gets my vote. Runner-up is Sonay Kartal but I imagine she will have more chance later this year.

 Thanks Michael - for J100, 200 etc think equivalent to senior levels:

J500 = M/W 1000

J300 = M/W 500

J200 = maybe doesnt align exactly but probably like an ATP/WTA 250?

J100 = WTA 125/ATP Challenger

J60 = M/W 25/35 level?

J30 =  M/W 15 level?

Probably slightly astray but you get the idea that a J200 is a decent achievement.

Sonay, by the way, has 4 prior PoM titles to her name, she is one of the highest PoM achievers (Fran leads the way) and well used to winning these things!!

Difficult to choose this month, as ever, but vote ultimately goes to Luke Johnson who seems to have gone from winning Challenger titles to winning an ATP500 with amazing speed.
