I didn't realise that there were doubles qualifiers. I should pay more attention.

I seem to recall that they're a peculiarity of ATP 500s for some reason.  I've no idea of the reasoning for them, however.

The 500 events on the ATP have a 4 team qualies field, with the two teams that win those two matches qualifying. Theyve had it for some years, tbh, why though is a question! As in why just at 500 level and not also at 1000 or 250? Its sort of makes no logical sense!

Yes, it's really the job of the WTA to make no logical sense.

I believe it's only one of the 4 teams that qualifies. It's giving an additional 3 teams a chance to take part. Although have no idea how much money the three non qualifiers get.

And giving 3 additional teams the chance is fine (qualies for singles gives 12 more players than the 4 who qualify an opportunity) but why just 500 level? Why not also do it at 1000 level? Or 250 level? Or for that matter in the Slams? I get cost is an issue lower down, but at ATP level, it shouldnt make much difference and not having it at 1000 level as well as 500 (why pull out the middle tier, basically?) has never been something I have understood

Acccording to the PDF of the draw there is no prizemoney for the qualifying winners or losers. The qualiying team gets 45 points and the runner-up 25 points - nothing for the first round losers.

Qualifying winners get guaranteed R32 prize money which is $14,185

Qualifying losers get QR2 prize money which is $7,270

The reasoning behind qualifiers in 500 events is because it was decided that the jump from 250s to 500s was too hard. 500 cuts are normally similar to Masters events and it would make sense if 500s were a bridge from 250s to 1000s which in doubles they are not - and are still not in spite of this. What is stupid is there is one WC and they also allow singles players to enter the 4 pair draw so it seems to mainly defeat the purpose. And of course if a team goes deep in a 250 they are punished by being no longer being able to play in the 500 as there are no SEs in doubles.

Thanks for that, wolf.    I had a feeling you might know the answer.
