Para Tennis-World Championships in Annecy 9th-14th September 2024

Anna is defending her titles next week in Annecy France next week. As usual the LTA get the details wrong, which are corrected below.

Defending champion Anna McBride is playing for GB in the World Championships, Annecy France next week. Some of the LTA's articles details are incorrect. She is 20 and not 21. She did not debut last year in France. She won her first World Champs singles/mixed doubles titles in Paris 2018 as a 14 year old and won the same in Brisbane Global Games in 2019. Plus the same at the Global Games last year in Vichy, France last year. She has also won the singles and women's doubles at the Australian Open twice, in 2023 and 2024.

Great stuff, thanks Annas dad- I knew these were approaching. All the best to Anna and the other British players taking part. Will you post updates through the event if you get time?

Out of interest - with Paralympics on at the moment, has there ever been discussion of an intellectual impairment classification event at the paralympics?

Also, I noticed Lambda commented that Flynn Thomas who is a top junior at the US Open, from Switzerland, is on the autism spectrum, not sure if that was something you were aware of, or if him.

Because of the Spanish basketball cheating scandal 20 years ago, most Paralympics LD events were stopped. They are starting to be reintroduced. There has been talk of a possibility of tennis for this category being included in the 2032 Brisbane Paralympics.

I am not aware of Flynn, but autism in tennis is very common. Many of the II1 category have it. There is also a new category of II3 that is exclusively for autism without a LD. Anna is in the top end of the II1 section and is not far off the II3.

World Championships Annecy day 2, 10th Sept 2024.

Two days of torrential rain ruined yesterday and the matches were reduced and played in a small poorly lit indoor centre. Anna has three matches today. She has already won her first singles 6-0. She has a ladies doubles now. Although, the opponents just target her partner, so no guarantees there. Anna also has a mixed doubles against a decent team in about 1-2 hours from now. 1-2pm our time.

Hopefully, the French officials are better today than they were yesterday. Yesterday, an Oz team lost to a French team when the umpire twice reversed a 40-15 score to 15-40. In Paris 2018 and Vichy 2023, I noticed a number of partisan line calls, which improved a bit when on the livestreamed court. But even there, anything close was always to the French players benefit.

For Anna's women's doubles they had a young kid umpiring who could not possibly have qualifications and could not call lines, or even focus. Balls 6 feet out called in and balls 2 feet in were called out. He was really small and refused to even get off his chair to check ball marks. Under the circumstances Anna did well, as the other team hit as many balls as they could at Anna's partner. So they lost 6-3 with one break gifted by the umpire.

The mixed doubles will hopefully, be a better match.

Are they playing on clay on the indoor courts or have they moved out doors?

I guess the big one for Anna is singles, presumably, where she is more in control of her own results. Is she quite a long way ahead of Lily Mills in terms of capability?

Good umpiring this time, 6-0 win in the mixed doubles

They are outdoors on the clay with some sunshine. The indoor clay is very slow and the courts dark.

Anna is defending the mixed doubles and the singles. The singles in the main priority with the mixed a very close second.

The women's doubles is a nightmare. The difference in playing strength between Anna and Lily is massive. Over 5 UTR points difference. People think Anna is Lily. Someone even came to her at Queens and said you play better than you did on the BBC and she said no that was Lily on the BBC, not me. Everything is hit to Lily and she refuses to come away from the net and gets in the way. So Anna cannot do what she did in OZ and have a clear court to herself. Even then Anna felt they were robbed bigtime in the women's doubles match by poor umpiring. The umpire in the mixed doubles was much better.

Anna has just been told not to worry about the women's doubles and focus on her other matches.

Apparently, the French 2nd seeded player is playing very well. So it is going to be a tough singles defence.

Anna won her 2nd singles match 6-0 in the rain. This continued and all further matches have now moved to the dark indoor courts a few miles away.
