Ok, it's a quiet day before mega US Open kick-off tomorrow
So....
I've lived on this planet for quite a few (!) decades now
Born and bred in the UK
BUT I'VE NEVER BEEN TO SCOTLAND
(I'm a true southerner - Oxford is the Midlands, as far as I'm concerned, and Birmingham is practically on the Scottish border )
So, when a New York city friend invited me to join them on a few days walking in Scotland, I said 'Where? What? Walking???? .... OK - let's go for it!'
So for the first time, I will be venturing north, truly north
My planes and trains stop and start in places I've no idea where they are - Stirling? Inverness?
Partly because one train has been cancelled already - which is on the back of a plane to France being cancelled - seriously - what's so difficult about actually running the schedule you're promised to do ?!?!!? (and NB these cancellations were nothing to do with any storm or anything)
I also hate mosquitos/midges - I hope the local insect life will bear that in mind and be respectful of my personal dislikes and body space
My New York friend? Or my new midge friend? I hear I'll be making a few
Seriously, thanks - it's really not big news - but it is a bit daft to get to good ol' middle age and never to have been to Scotland - especially as this board (and GB tennis) has a strong Scottish contingent
I'll let you know
PS And I'll try to behave myself - well, I'll try most of the time.....

Have a fabulous time, hope you packed a raincoat and insect repellent I have been a few times as had family living in Aberdeen and Perth. Beautiful scenery, beaches and friendly people
It's so beautiful up there (though I was born and have always lived in SW or SE England, my mum comes from Aberdeen, so we spent most of our childhood holidays up in NE Scotland with them), which part are you going to?
I hope you brought along plenty of midge repellent, though there's not much that repels them - given how members of my family used to get differentially affected, it seems that either they like the smell of your blood or (hopefully!) they don't, and also the faster you walk, the better.

Hope you have a great time, CD! As everyone else has said, it's a beautiful part of the UK to go walking and I'm sure you'll get a warm welcome everywhere.
I'm a little worried, steven, by the 'the faster you walk, the better' advice ...... I was sitting smugly confident about this 'walking' thingy, safe in the knowledge (I thought) that my friend, bless, whom I've known for ages, had always been a slightly chubby, very 'city' sort, and is five years older than me.
Well, we met up yestereday, briefly, in London - and what do you know? Yes, you've guessed it, the blighter now spends 90 mins every morning working out, looks trim and toned, and yours truly is now up a gum tree.....I'm going to be the tag-along charlie at the end, huffing and puffing

Brilliant, I'm sure trying to keep up will do you good. Maybe cover yourself in a mosquito net (joking!) or keep away from stagnant water at twilight until you get up to speed!
