Nasty for Emma, looking at Pegula in the second round.

In theory Katie and Emma  could meet in the 3r round, This would mean Emma would probably  have to beat both Kenin and Pegula to get there,

Emma would most likely have had a lot of support from the US fans, except in the situation which has occurred where she will play Americans in round 1 and 2.
Tough tough draw for her.

I don't think Dart or Boulter would have any complaints about theirs.

You'd clearly rather have drawn a PR blatantly picking up a pay cheque, or a LL or something, but I think the opener is quite nice for Emma. Kenin is having a very poor year, losing 6 of her last 7, or 20 of her 28 YTD, but it does still have that big match feel about it, will likely be on a big court, and I can imagine Emma thriving on the occasion. Plus I guess if she did lose you could say it was against a former grand slam champion and former top 5 if you were wanting to save face. Pegula potentially in the 2nd round is very unfortunate though, and it almost certainly will be vs her as well.

Some really nice looking R1 matches

Ostapenko vs Osaka
Zheng vs Anisimova
Andreescu vs Paolini
and of course Emma vs Kenin

Some of those wouldn't look out of place in the L16 or QF.

One lucky loser spot already, even though the draw was made today.

And out of all the qualifiers Katie gets Aliaksandra Sasnovich (***) WR101 [Q2]

In other news, why are US Open women's doubles entries so hard to find?

Not sure Katie B will fancy a likely meeting with Pegula in the early rounds any more than Emma will.

Ons Jabeur pulled out and with Vondrousova injured it means neither of the 2023 Wimbledon finalists is playing

So Lily is in the lucky loser hat, but I haven't seen it confirmed what order they drew (other than Rakhimova getting #1 obviously).

Not clear any further withdrawals are expected though anyway.

Well who knows. Emmas has a win against Pegula off Jessicas WTA win on grass in the summer. If Emma can get past Kenin, Emma will certainly rise to a match say on Ashe with Jessica.

Is Emma even in New York. I wouldn't be hugely surprised if she withdrew.

Yes she is there. She's posted photos, and is on the practice schedule for day (and was yesterday as well)

Oh ye of little faith!. She is there, but a bit grumpy (troubled perhaps) allegedly and declined interview, autographs etc after practice on Grandstand I read.
