Weeks 31-32 - Olympics - Roland-Garros, Paris, France - Clay

As play starts today, putting up a mens event thread. Play starts today. On the mens side, singles includes:

Jack v Nishikori (Japan)

Cam v Griekspoor (NL)

Dan v Echargui (TUN)

in doubles, we have Joe and Neal and Andy and Dan playing.

As there is only one mixed pair, Joe and Heather, not sure where this will get covered, in the mens or womens thread - probably both, haha.

Sorry, dont do the rankings thing, or proper draw format, hope someone can fill in the gaps and tidy it up!

L16:  Heather Watson & Joe Salisbury CR 59 (53+6) vs Gabriela Dabrowski & Félix Auger-Aliassime (CAN) CR 22 (3+19)

They could face Coco Gauff & Taylor Fritz (3) in the QF if they win that one.

Looks like all the GB men's matches have been postponed for the day.

I honestly don't like Olympics tennis - so will keep an eye on scores as it would be perverse not to - but won't be watching it

Apart from a bit of doubles

It's the one time where doubles seems to come into its own - the team element, I guess

I watched 15 mins of Nadal & Alcaraz yesterday - and thoroughly enjoyed it - to have the clay GOAT and baby GOAT on the court together (probably will never happen again, after this event), enjoying themselves, playing some excellent tennis, with a singles bent, which obviously bamboozled their opponents a bit - you could see them going, 'but you're supposed to return that crosscoourt - EVERY doubles pair would return that crosscourt' - as the Spanish duo fizzed some ball down the line - all good fun !

yes, it was good fun and agreed, its one where doubles is the equal of singles for sure - every medal is the same currency whatever the sport or format.

Rafa and Carlos could easily win this , and beat a top pair for openers on the clay.

was it me or did the clay seem very heavy and slow and a few bad bounces thrown in?

If unranked doubles players are being asked to be alternates based on their career high singles ranking - as they seem to be - then I think Joe Salisbury must have turned down a place in the singles draw and Neal Skupski must be close to next in line. Francisco Cabral, (UNR, CH 862) has just made the draw.

Looks like a fair few have turned down a spot, including 44 yo Rohan Bopanna.

It makes a bit of a mockery though, albeit interesting to see how they get on!

Yes, Djokovic indicated it was all very strange after his canter vs Ebden.

Evo struggling to close out his match, getting a bit frustrated and having treatment after a fall. He will want to get this over with in straight sets to be fresh for the doubles.
