Hugo is an unranked 18-year-old who hails from Sevenoaks &, as a qWC, has been making waves at the Nottingham M25 this week, first qualifying by beating his fellow 18-year-old, Phoenix Weir (WR 1704), then Mike Shaw (WR 1265), both in straight sets, backing it up by despatching Ali Gray (WR 618, but with a CH of 237 from September 2022), who was forced to retire at 5-7, & Dan Little (WR 1126/CH 564 in June last year) in straight sets. He is currently engaged in a QF against JPJ, who took the first set on a tie-break (7-5) before the weather intervened. Irrespective of the outcome of that match, have we unearthed another little gem?
There seems to be very little solid information about him available on the net other than that he was a freshman at Vanderbilt, a private research university in Nashville, TN last year (subject unknown), that he won both the singles & doubles titles at the LTA British Junior U12 Tennis Championships in 2018 & that he launched a successful crowd-funding page when he was 11 ( ). The Just Giving page says that both his parents are teachers, but does anyone know anything else about the young man? There are a few references to him on the junior pages on here a couple of years ago, but that seems to be all. Is his dad perchance French?
All I can add to this is that I saw him play as a tiddler at Sutton, I believe it was (not that that's very useful at all - curly-haired lad, that's the memory I have
He was the GB National Champion in U16
He was finalist in the 2023 U18 Nationals in doubles, playing with Henry Searle
(And, yes, his dad has to be French, surely - you should be able to sue him under the Trade Description Act if not )
I am Hugo Coquelin and I am 11 years old. I live in Sevenoaks. My passion is tennis and you might have seen me as I regularly feature in the local paper for my tennis results. I am hoping you would consider sponsoring me so I can pursue my dream to become a professional tennis player.
Currently ranked 10 nationally under 12, I'm the highest ranked in the U.K. for my actual age group: U12 first season. I have competed in numerous International, National and Regional tournaments and National Championships right from the age of 8. I have won the Nationals for u9 and u12, and was runner up for u10. Last summer, at 10 years old, I reached the semis of the road to Wimbledon, an u14 tournament.
I have represented the South East of England and Kent at County Cup for the last four years. This year, I have been selected to represent GB in the u12 European Winter Cup in Estonia, in Belgium, in Queenswood and in Summer Cup in Dijon and finals in Biot, France.
Both my parents are teachers so funds are limited. I currently have 5 hours of individual lessons and 6 hours of group lessons a week therefore I am looking for donations that could help my parents cover my tennis expenses.

Very subtle. Needs to go into politics when his tennis career is over

Young Hugo continues to make waves in Nottingham, this week making the QFs by virtue of having a WC into the main draw instead of having to qualify, dismissing the Australian fourth seed with relative ease (3 & 5). He faces George Loffhagen (WR 702) tomorrow. Good luck, lad.
