Romania F4

David Brewer has handed out a double bagel to some poor Romanian bloke and makes R2 of qualifying.

David Brewer is the 2nd seed in qualifying here and none of the guys who he could face in qualifying are seeded so he ought to make it through. David has his best results on clay so it's surprising that he hasn't played more European clay-court futures in the last few years.

He was in good form in the two GB clay-court futures and prior to that he won a British tour event on clay so he should have a good chance of doing well here.

He had a cushy rd1 draw, his opponent was basically a local club player who hadn't even registered with the ITF !

Rd2: D Brewer v O Dinuta [Rom]

David will be heavy favourite to win this one. His opponent is 18 and has only played 2 professional events, qualies in Romania and Egypt - he lost in qualifying rd1 both times in straights. In rd1 here, he beat a local club player 7-6, 6-0. I would be surprised if David drops more than 3 games.

Qualifying:

Rd2: D Brewer bt O Dinuta [Rom] - don't know score

Qualifying round: A Daescu [Rom] bt D Brewer - don't know score

That's a bad, bad result for David. Daescu is an unranked 17 year old Romanian who's only played 5 pro events and wasn't even registered with the ITF before March this year. Daescu qualified for a futures event for the first time last week in Romania F2 and won a set 6-1, against someone ranked in the 600s before losing in 3. However, he's still a player which I would have expected David to beat.

David has a small chance of still getting into the main draw as he's first in line for a lucky loser spot

Main draw:

Rd1:
C Eaton v A Cruciat [Rom] [4]

A Kennaugh v H Dani [Mor]

Andy Kennaugh has the best chance of winning a round as he's been drawn against an unranked Moroccan qualifier. Hafid Dani has never won a main draw match and plays predominantly on clay in Morocco. Andy's luck ends there as in rd2 he'd be likely to face 2nd seed Gabriel Moraru of Romania who's ranked 279.

Chris must be looking enviously at Andy's draw as his opponent, 4th seed Adrian Cruciat is ranked about 500 places higher at 343 and Cruciat also reached the semis recently of Romania F2. However, Cruciat lost surprisingly in rd2 last week so hopefully Chris can inflict another surprise defeat on him.

Doubles: Andy and Chris have teamed up again. Unfortunately they play the 2nd seeds in rd1.

David Brewer is partnering Ireland's John McGahon. They play the 4th seeds in rd1

Andy and Chris are in singles action tomorrow but the doubles rd1 has been played and there've been mixed results.

Brewer and McGahon beat the 4th seeds 3-6, 6-4, 6-3...

but Kennaugh and Eaton lost to the 2nd seeds 3-6, 4-6

Yes, results from here aren't particularly good, to say the least.

Chris Eaton lost 7-5, 6-4 to 4th seed Adrian Cruciat of Romania which was an expected result and Chris did well to push Cruciat reasonably hard in both sets after losing heavily to an unranked player last week.

Andy Kennaugh's result was the big disappointment. Despite losing a tight 3 setter to a lower ranked player last week, I thought that he'd have an easy win this week against an unranked qualifier, probably the best draw he could have possibly had. Unfortunately Andy lost 6-4, 6-4.

All British interest in this event has now finished as David Brewer and Ireland's John McGahon lost their quarter-final to a Romanian pair, 6-1, 6-2.

Hope Andy can get back on track...he has taken a dip in the rankings so could do with a good run soon !
