I was lucky enough to be front row to watch this live. I definitely think that Katie would have won regardless of the retirement, she wasnt playing particularly well but it was all on her racquet. She kind of acknowledged that she wasnt playing well and was quite down on herself, lots of positive words coming from her camp, Alex was sat pretty much next to me for a large part of the first set before his doubles and he was telling her to fake it til you make it. It was funny though as she was so grumpy on court but as she was leaving I asked for a selfie and she was so lovely. I felt sorry for Fruhvirtova though, it wasnt too hot or humid by Miami standards and she was crying whilst she was playing, I heard Katies camp saying that the poor girl was under a lot of pressure.

Oh thats sad. Fruhvirtova is such an up and coming new potential star. Hope she is OK. So hard transitioning to seniors. Thinking of our own young players.

Katie has 146 points in total to defend by end of French Open, with most coming from her Japan excursion. One more wins in Miami would get her 95 of those. Almost then a two month free hit, but importantly she has probably just guaranteed herself a French Open seeding.

Azarenka will be the first time she has ever played a seeded player in a 1000, that is lower seeded than she is. And with Sabalenka knocked out, she is now ranked to reach the semi-finals!!

Katie just fallen into a ranking space where another win wont take her up any further, but its all building points into a very solid ranking total.
