Never heard of the Russian? Was she known by another name previously?

Not that Im aware of. Shes been around for a while, previously been top 200 and won a Wimbledon mdwc in c 2015 by winning surbiton/ an itf warm up. shes on the comeback trail post injury and is not a player I thought Jodie would lose to unless she was having a bit of a mare on court

Thanks - well, seems a disappointing loss; i dont follow Jodie too closely but she seems very much an up and down player, frustrating !

That's disappointing from/for Jodie, but at least she seemed to fight back in the second set, to judge from the point-by-point scores and many breaks of serve, rather than just self-destruct as she's done in the past. Maybe something wasn't working for her or Melnikova was playing very well/had a style she struggled with.

Ouch. That is Melnikova's 1st top 100 win for 2 years when she beat Heather in QR1 in Doha and before that she hadn't had a win against a top 100 ranked opponent since 2015. It's only her 4th career win against a top 100 ranked opponent. And she's only had 3 wins against top 300 ranked opponents in the last year going into this match. Whichever way you look at it, that is a terrible result for Jodie.

Might've been better off in the 250 in Austin.

Still, she is back from a(nother) wee injury. Better luck next tournament.

I was wondering how Melnikova even got into the event with that ranking to be honest. But perhaps Jodie isn't fully fit yet.

Isnt Jodie just - well up and down. Unreliable? I think with her, its easy to say she must have been injured etc ( and maybe she was) but I also think shes just one of those players that turns up or she doesnt. Infuriating types!

She has just come  back after missing a few weeks . Think it was a stomach injury.
