So, the prizemoney for the BJK Cup this year is $9.6m - the ITF announced that this (including $2.4m to the winners) is equal to the mens: from the BJK Cup website

Thanks to the partnership and support of title sponsor, Gainbridge, the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Finals will offer an unprecedented Player Prize Money (PPM) purse of $9.6 million, with this years World Champions set to receive a record $2.4 million as part of the ITFs Advantage All programme to drive value for the womens game

David Haggerty, ITF President, said: We are proud to announce this news on the eve of the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals. Achieving gender parity in our sport is a key part of the ITFs Advantage All programme, and I am delighted we have been able to offer equivalent prize money with the Davis Cup again this year. We are grateful to our title sponsor Gainbridge for helping to make this possible and for their ongoing support as we continue to build on the recent growth of the womens World Cup of Tennis.

But...from the Davis Cup website: in para 6 of the below article, it says Davis Cup 2023 Finals prizemoney will be $15m

Both cant be right - so the question for me is, did the Davis Cup money fall when Pique Kosmos mob bailed out, was it intended to be $15m and is now $9.6m for the men as well as the women?

It feels like there is some misinformation here - either it isnt parity, or the mens isnt $15m and is really a lot less, or it was planned to be $15m and has quietly dropped to $9.6m - or maybe it wasnt quiet and I just missed it?

I had written an explanation based on the fact that Davis Cup pays prize money to the Group Stage in September and so the comparisons being made were for finals week, but then I realised the team numbers in finals week were different so that's not the explanation. The different number of teams and formats of the Finals in the 2 competitions make it difficult to make comparisons. So I don't know.

But perhaps for added context to the $15m

A number of sites reported the expected Davis Cup prize money to be
Winner $2.1 million
Runner Up $1.5 million
Semi-Final $1.3 million
Quarterfinal $1.1 million
September Group Stages $514,000

I make that to be $14.7m, but for the Winner, RU, SF and those knocked out at group stage it is not hugely different. The absence of a QF between the group stage and the SF in the BJK Cip accounts for most of the difference between the reported expected Davis Cup prize money and the BJK Cup prize money.

According to the BJK Cup website, the 2023 money is as below: which comes out as $9.6m as they say. If we take just the finals 8 from the mens, that adds up to $10.6m BUT it is structured differently, so the womens winner gets more. I guess what I am saying is, it doesnt quite align and the womens winners money hides the fact that they get less money lower down the finishing positions. It would seem to be easier to have aligned the money at each point - although it would be easier to have the same event structure as well, 12 womens teams in the final with groups and 8 mens in a straight knockout with pre groups last month doesnt sit that well to me, particularly as the matches are all 3 rubbers of 3 sets. Oh well, time for me to stop taking a swipe at these governing bodies, it doesnt help anyone!    

The world champions will receive $2,400,000 
          The runners-up will receive $1,440,000 
          The semi-finalists will receive $960,000
          Group stage teams will receive $480,000

In the BJK Cup Finals the last 4 is partially known :

One semi will be Canada versus USA or Czech Republic
The other Italy versus Slovenia or Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan need to beat Slovenia today and it looks like mathematically Australia are out as they have a negative sets won lost record.

Leylah Fernandez has been playing well for Canada and Italy look like a strong team this week. Crowds seem to be pretty decent also from what Ive seen, but it could be judicious editing !

Petr Pala is the Czech captain this week as he was last year. Both years he has had significantly the best squad available by far. Last year he threw away the semi against the Swiss by selecting the out of form Pliskova when the in-form Vondrousova was available. This year he seems keen to be even more incompetent. In the crucial final group match he has selected Siniakova (basically a doubles player) to play against Collins when Bouzkova and Noskova ( who won their first matches) were available as indeed was Kreijickova. How does this guy keep his job?

 All things being equal, czechia should win this event! 

 

i see Slovenia got through today to play Italy in the semi. Not sure anyone would have predicted that semi.

The line up for the NextGen finals, these are in Saudi the week after DC Finals - Shelbayh gets the local wildcard
For me, this event is fun (location aside) and a Fils, Michelsen final would be good.

The 2024 Next Gen Finals are December 18-22, a month later than this year. Seems a weird time, right in the off season.

Im hoping Arthur Fery gets close to these next season.

Next seasons Next Gen finals is 20 and under instead of 21 and under. Its also providing more opportunities for challenger entry for top 350ranked next gen era
