They met in Chiswick in 2018 with Jodie winning in three.
Got to take that - both should win their opener and then one will get main draw. big opportunity for both of them. Id take that as a British draw anytime
Wretched viewing experience with the stream cutting out every few points, I probably missed about 25 points. From 3-3 15-15, Jodie had a strong spell featuring 4 winners + 2 aces, winning 8 points in a row to take her to *5-3 15-0 then managed to lose the next 11 points and only took one more point in the set, playing abysmally, though Marina did contribute several impressive shots in amongst the Burrage errors.
Strange match as Jodie dominated the MBR serve early in the match then couldn't make any impact for 4 service games during the middle part of the contest.
A few decent spells from Jodie in the 2nd set, fought back from 15-40 to hold at the start of the set with some big first serves. Came back from 40-0 to eventually break back for 3-3 after a very long game in which she found it difficult to get first serve returns in play (not the only time this happened).
Jodie attempted several aggressive 2nd serves but typically ended up as a df, missing narrowly wide or long. Likewise on return, big swings resulted in lots of cheap points for MBR. Jodie's first serve percentage only 50%. Marina struck more winners than I was expecting.
3 excellent returns earned her 3 bps as MBR served for the match but Jodie made a miserable attempt to attack a 2nd serve then her backhand crosscourt clipped the net and landed wide with Marina helpless. An inspired drop shot from Marina saved the 3rd bp, then Jodie's aggressive backhand gave her another bp but no stream for that point, nor the final point of the match.
Not sure I actually saw enough of the match to know what really happened.

But Jodie loses 7-5 6-4 to the WR 140. Hardly the most auspicious start to the US swing.
Jodie's form still quite inconsistent. Incidentally where do most of her points come from? It feels as if she got into the Top 100 without any standout tournaments.
542 of Jodie's 747 counting points have come from 7 counters of 48 points or more. Her remaining 9 counters total 205 points with scores from 15 to 30.
These top 7 counters in order of points :
180 - Nottingham WTA 250 RU in June ( beat WRs 21, 72 & 77 )
80 - Croissy-Beaubourg W60 title in April ( beat WR 73 )
I think Jodie will take a while to adapt to the higher level and was not surprised that she lost this. I see next week she's playing at W125 level which seems a good idea. Hopefully she can get a few wins there to keep her confidence high.
Its also encouraging that she doesnt have any big points off until next year except portroz. So if she can manage to get a few wins at some bigger events - shell get back in the top 100 and be more experienced for the 2024 events. Shes made a huge positive jump, disappointing loss but still great that shes getting more exposure at this level.
