Week 37 - Davis Cup Finals, Group Stage - (Indoor Hard)

I am so surprised Jack did not get asked for singles today.

Dan & Neal vs Mahut & ERV?  no

The anticipated and surely our best available selection.

I wasn't disputing that, merely dismissing the hope of a GB victory.  cry  I'd be delighted to be proved wrong, of course, but on the evidence of the first set (1-6), it seems highly unlikely.

Yes, certainly looked a toughie. Re 'best available' of course Leon chose not to have Joe available. If Dan is feeling it a bit after his singles, Neal & Joe would have been a very good option to have ( I would have preferred Joe here rather than Andy or possibly Jack with his fitness issues ). They at times haven't clicked in team competitions as hoped for but have won 2 ATP titles together in the past in very limited tournament partnerships together.

Keep on fighting though, guys.

Norrie should not have been picked and has been playing poorly for months . What on earth was Smith thinking ?

Agree 100%. Smith made the same mistake in picking him twice. He was the only player to lose singles in the 3 ties and did it twice.

Also think Salisbury should have been in the squad to partner Skupski leaving Evans to play all 3 singles.

Randomly Mahut and Roger-Vasselin have played at least one tournament together every year since 2007.

I dont think this is fair on Dan, TBH. Smith - if we don't win the doubles, then surely he needs to go? I don't get this pussyfooting around with LTA tennis. Bad decisions, it's not the players.

1-6 7-6(4):  OK, maybe a glimmer of hope...

Phew !!!

3 MPs saved at *4-5 0-40 on Dan's serve after a DF.

Ridiculously well judged leave at 15-40 and big chance missed by R-V at 30-40.

5-5*

Phew 2 !!!

A 4th MP against at *30-40. Skupski saved with an ace and in the next point showed not bad footwork to backpedal and put away a very well angled smash from deep in the court.

6-6, final set TB !
