Henry Searle

Henry (born 2006) has to have a thread of his own because, as of today, 16th July 2023, he won the Boys' Junior Wimbledon singles title.

This is the first time for GB in over 60 years.

Not only that, he won every round in two sets, with first serves today of 134 and 132 mph - this was the quickest serve recorded today - faster than Alcaraz, faster than Djoko! He also played this week with wonderful attacking groundshots, especially on his forehand side, and showing no fear in coming forward.

Searles route to the final

  • First round: beat Juan Carlos Prado Angelo (BOL, world No.2, seeded No.1) 7-6(6), 6-3
  • Second round: beat Manas Dhamne (IND, world No.78) 6-1, 6-4
  • Third round: beat Arthur Gea (FRA, world No.20) 6-4, 6-2
  • Quarter-final: beat Joao Fonseca (BRA, world No.8, seeded No.8) 7-6(2), 6-3
  • Semi-final: vs Cooper Williams (USA, world No.4, seeded No.6) 7-6(4), 6-3

Henry comes from Wolverhampton (and has a wonderfully rowdy Henry's Barmy Army supporters group). He's a tall lad, about 6ft 4.

Henry has been on the radar in the juniors threads here for several years; he made the semis of the U18 National Championships this year and the QFs the year before, where he also won the U16s.

At the age of 12, Searle spent nine months at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy. Since then he's been part of the Loughborough Academy with coaches such as Morgan Phillips.

There are JA places at lots of challenger events now so a real opportunity to utilise those.

Yeah, this time it did.  smile  Interesting quote from Morgan Phillips:

"But also there's a new system with the junior ranking. If you get top-10 then you get fast tracked into some Challenger events. That's a big incentive for us as well."
