Wimbledon wildcards 2023 - women

Bjorklund is in the ilkley final, unseeded. Plays top seed Navarro. If Bjorklund won, could she still get a card?

Seriously?

So, there's no Marni

And there's an unused wildcard into qualis - that makes me truly irritated

But the four from play-offs have their place

So that seems fine

And I guess Marni is acutally injured

And Sonay is moved up

And Wickmayer can go whistle

Lol I think Wickmayer deserves one to be fair

So the far-fetched believers were right - it was a little far-fetched - and Katie Swan has not withdrawn, which is a good relief (let's hope it stays that way)

 Yes, so do I

And I really don't see why Millie, or Ella, or someone couldn't have had that last wildcard into qualis - the press don't care about qualifiers - they never even notice they're on - so there's no pressure about 'spoiling' our players

But, overall, it seems quite a good batch

Yes that's the singles entry lists all fully updated - so one unused qualy wildcard let's Juvan in, and Sonay has hers upgraded so all 8 main draw wildcards have been allocated. Bit annoying but they can't really justify handing one to an early loser in the playoffs or it defeats the point of the system. Its a case for having had another name awarded directly.

No further doubles wildcards announced but, as yet, they haven't just moved the next 3 pairs in (although I'm sure they will, I can't see where else a pair could come from).

You could have pulled one from a hat if it has to be SO fair

The winner of Surbiton was promised one. I am not a Wickmayer fan but it would be grossly unfair if Bjorklund wins tomorrow and Wickmayer is thereby deprived. So, for tomorrow only, I am a Navarro fan!

 Wickmayer is not getting one

She's already deprived of one

It was, seemingly, not a 'hard promise'

The list is on Wimbledon site - there's eight wildcard slots and eight wildcards given, and Wickmayer is not one of them

I wonder what Lily Miyazaki thinks of Sonay getting a wildcard ahead of herself - I would guess she can't be happy and I am really surprised that the winners of Ilkley and Surbiton won't get one - for me this is a massive U-turn from previous years, when the winners of those events always got one (if their ranking meant they needed it.

No-one knows what is debated by the wildcard committee, but it looks like a seismic shift away from awarding 2 places to the winners of those events, and I suspect if it has happened, that in future years, the winners of those events may not get one. It is something that has begged me for years, as I feel we should do everything to help the best British players progress, the same as every other Grand Slam host does.

Purely comparing Sonay and Lily, Lily is of course ranked higher but I personally have no problem with Sonay being awarded a MD WC ahead of Lily after 6 straight set grass court wins over top 200 players in the last 3 weeks, with her 3 losses being to 2 top 100 players and to Katie Boulter ( who is now top 100 ).

Grass court form in the lead up to Wimbledon is one of the criteria that it is stated will be taken account of.

Sonay represented GB in the BJK Cup tie against the Czechs in Prague (though didn't get to play) in April 2022, so perhaps that was taken into account.

As I said I have no issue with Sonay getting a WC before Lily. But I am not sure about any case for being chosen for a WC because she was previously chosen for a BJK Cup squad ( more than a year ago anyway )?? Did Lily make herself unavailable?
