Wimbledon wildcards 2023 - women

So it is 5 weeks until the start of qualifying for Wimbledon. We now know the rankings for main draw entry and we have no players who can improve their ranking in a last ditch attempt to make qualifying. So who will be the wild cards?

The main draw wildcards mostly choose themselves. The only questions being will Jodie need one (at WR109, the answer is probably) and will Lily get one. I'm not certain. I hope so, but with 5 other Brits with a wildcard it wouldn't surprise me if she didn't. It may depend on whether there are any formerly high ranked players needing wild cards (Svitolina? I know she has a SR but being a SF and given AELTC's stance on wanting to show support for Ukraine, they could give her a WC, saving her that SR for the USO.)

So they will be Burrage, Boulter, Dart, Swan, Watson, 2 grass tournament winners (if needed), and possibly Svitolina.

The discussion this year is probably around qualifying wildcards. We know Isa Lacy has a qWC from winning the junior Nationals and there are 2 reserved for the play-off winners. I think last year's junior winner, Liv Hovde (WR344), will also receive a qWC. That leaves 5 to be allocated.

Just outside of qualifying we have Sonay (WR273), Naiktha (WR301), Fran (WR316), Anna (WR329), Eden (WR364) and Eliz (WR371). We also have top juniors in Ella (JWR 12), Ranah (JWR 17, WR 766), Hep (JWR 84), Mimi (JWR 37) and Hannah (JWR 73) who are likely to be in contention.

Sonay is a certainty for a qWC. Fran has a SR available to get into qualifying directly, but only being able to enter 2 grand slams with a SR and having used 1 for Roland Garros I think she'll save her remaining grand slam SR for the US and take a qWC for Wimbledon. That leaves 3. I look at who is remaining from the senior list and I'd put them on a par with the juniors.

Naiktha has been having more success in doubles and will likely get doubles WC so I think I would pass on a qWC for her.
I would like to give a qWC to Anna in recognition of the progress she has made in the last couple of years without much help financially or with wildcards but I wonder if there is too much competition from the juniors for her to get one and may need to go through the play-offs.
Eliz has also made good progress and in many years gone by with that progress and being ranked in the mid 300s would likely to have a qWC, but this year, like Anna, may need to go through the play-offs.
Ella is our top ranked junior but has been on shocking form this year for whatever reason.
Ranah made the SF of junior AO, has been out injured for much of the period since but is making her return.
Mimi has unfortunately been injured a bit of late which led to her being unable to defend her junior Nationals titles. She's without doubt one of our better prospects but that injury and lack of matchplay may mean she's further down the pecking order this year than she would otherwise have been.
Little needs to be said about Hannah. She has always been a possibility without needing to win the junior Nationals. It was 50/50 on losing after the Nationals but her performance in her debut pro tournament backed up earlier performances in juniors against juniors with relatively high senior rankings that she can be competitive (not that there was really any doubt about that) and for me moved the probability of her getting a qWC to be more likely than not.

Performances in Surbiton, Nottingham and qualifying in Ilkley are going to play a part in the awarding of qWCs, but for now I think the qWCs are
Kartal, Jones, Lacy, Stoiber, Klugman, Hovde (USA), PO1, PO2 and the last one is tricky, Id say either Bains or Xu (but if it were my choice I'd give it to Brogan or Maloney)

An excellent anlaysis, Lambda (as expected )

Ignoring any amazing grass court runs, or major unfortunate hiccups, i.e. basing it on where we are now:

Like you, I expect that Anna, Eliz, Naiktha, Eden, as well as Emily App, Freya, etc., will be expected to go through play-offs. In some ways, that's what play-offs are for. And, as you say, Naiktha and Eden, say, will very likely get doubles WCs.

I also expect Hannah Klugman to get one. She extremely nearly earned one in her own right (would have done if it hadn't rained), she has shown the level, and the press story is great.

I'm not so sure about Ranah. Big fan but I don't think she's in there yet. I also expect Ranah and Ella etc to get doubles wildcards (not necessarily together)

The main other name I would throw into the mix is Marni.

She's young (only 20), I know she's highly thought of, she's had injury problems to account for her current ranking....

I think she only needs to perform reasonably to be in with a good shout

Thanks Lamda. Let's hope for some brilliant performances on the grass.

This follows on from my unanswered question on another thread. Why would Wimbledon feel obligated to give wildcards to a 40-something semi-retired player when the likes of Kenin can't get one for the French Open?

Possibly because the crowds would be thrilled to see Venus Williams on court but honestly couldn't pick Kenin out of a two-person line-up?

They also used to give them to Stosur every year. I doubt she's that popular

 Why? I really liked her

Obviously not of Venus' cachet but pretty popular, I'd say, and a lot of Aussie support in the UK so makes some sense

I wouldn't be surprised if Fran gets a MDWC rather than a QWC

I will be really controversial here but I would give them to the top British juniors!

I would also like to see Fran get a MD WC.

I thought once you win a GS you're automatically always 'entitled' to a WC if you request one? Maybe Kenin wanted more match play?

I second CD's nomination for Marni - I'd put her ahead of Ranah, Bains etc. Marni is also already training at Wimbledon, which may or probably not mean anything. Either way, it'll be a pretty competitive/high-standard playoff.
