Week 21 - French Open Grand Slam Qualifying- Paris, France Clay

It would be nice if the British girls could just stay fit

Yes, though a question I would put out there is whether there truly is a systemic fitness issue in GB women's tennis as cleary many here believe?

While we do have more top 200 players than we have often had in the past ( simple fact ), it is still statistically a pretty small sample, and certainly small enough for sheer coincidence to be a major factor, especially when you have say the clearly separate issues that Fran abd Katie B have / have had that are not connected to fitness regimes.

Not saying we shouldn't consider and discuss how we go about training and fitness regimes in GB, when there clearly have been issues, just that beware automatically thinking that there is that systemic issue from such a relatively small sample.

Katie loses 10 point tie break 10-3 . What is it  with our players as with Sonay they lose after serving for the match.

Yes but what about: what was it with Kreuger that she served for it and blew a 5-2 lead?

There's plenty of player that blink at the last minute....

There were a lot of breaks in that last set - I don't think Katie getting broken at 6-5 is any different from Kreuger getting broken when she served for it

BUT that was a poor tiebreak..... :(

Katie is a more experienced player though and ought to have served it out.

I am with CD here  the issue was much more the MTB rather than losing serve when serving for it.

Yes Katie is the more experienced so should be the more likely one to see it over the line in a close match, decided on a MTB, not that the MTB ended up close since it ran away from Katie simply down to poor play before the real sharp end.

14 of the 28 games before the MTB were breaks of serve, 6 of the 12 in the last set  so precisely half. Not unusually for a women's match, especially on clay, serve was proving no advantage throughout. So essentially it looks more like just another game Katie lost rather than the game that she served for it being a particular issue.

I'd like to see any real evidence that 'our players' are worse at serving out than these from other nations.

Not surprised with Mirra, another Russian star in the making. How do they do it?

Actually, it's the Czechs who are hitting it out of the park, I reckon.

Russia, at least, is a big country. And with some decent players.

But for their size, the number of top female players that they have in Czechia is just amazing

Rather frustratingly - four (!!) players have withdrawn from the main draw since qualifying started. Shame for those alternates who missed an opportunity.

But the alternates all got to play in qualifiers, yes? And those four slots will have lucky losers?

So the opportunity is still there - just wider, no?

I think Paul was refering to the four alternates that just missed out on playing qualifying

It will surely depend on personal circumstances? I don't know about the other 3, but one of the 4, a former recent #2, with the most main draw clay wins in 2023, heading back in the right direction, presumably had a scan this week (after qualifying started) seemingly now has career altering injuries, will at least miss the next two slams, on the back of missing the AO at the start of the year - I'm sure some random 250 odd player not being ranked high enough to guarantee playing an event will be the least of her worries at the moment when she received the news, and the others could be in a similar position.

Thrilled for Fiona Ferro !!!

Again, the rape and sexual abuse allegations are extremely disturbing (to have a coach saying 'it was love' is just stomach turning)

A really tough year for her

So just wonderful to see her get the win - and, seemingly, she is the first French player to qualify for the MD since 2006

I also note that Tauson is through to the MD

As is Danilovic

As people said, those were tought draws for Katie S and Hev

(Jaquemot and Kreuger were pretty close to qualifying too)

Tough draws but there are no easy draws in Grand Slams and really clay isnt good for us (apart from a certain Sue Barker!) You might find this interesting from Dan Evens , to the point but valid I would say. Emma Raducanu 'papered over cracks' in British Tennis (msn.com)
