Week 16 - WTA500 - Stuttgart, Germany Clay

Obviously disappointing given how well she did here last year (albeit with a kinder draw) but losing to a former French Open champion is hardly a disgrace. I can't see Emma dropping to 125 or ITF level and not sure she really needs to (remember how well she played at IW last month) as long as she can stay fit, especially for the grass court season.

Agreed dodrade. I would like to see Emma playing 250's at the moment and if not for the ankle and illness there may have been a couple more(?) We are where we are, we know she has talent, we know that she is working hard, better days will come. She looks destined to drop points during the clay season without her previous years ranking and level of tournament. There should be worthwhile gains on the grass and hard courts so it'll be interesting as to where she ends the year?

I dont follow Emma very closely at all, although wish her well, but it looks like she takes a big hit next couple of weeks and will drop out of the top 100? Which presumably means a Wimbledon direct entry is in question and she would take a wild card from someone else?

If Jodie picks up points in the next month and Emma doesn't then it is very possible. If neither of them play at all Emma would stay at least 40 points ahead at the end of May - which is minimal in terms of WTA points but significant in terms of points from ITF tournaments.

I dont think shed be taking a wildcard away from anybody. She reached the 4th Rd at Indian Wells with some impressive wins so a wild card, if needed, would be deserved

What we don't know is how much of a problem Emma's wrist is. She had said that she was going to be investigating it further and seeking a long term solution since it was only 'being managed" in the short term (I am not quoting her exactily but paraphrasing her comments and reports from around the end of Indian Wells/ Miami run).

She was actually quite impressive in both of those tournaments but what toll that took upon on her wrist (s) we don't know.

It's no good speculating on what level tournaments she should be entering if the root problem is a physical one that is not just improved upon by more training and work outs.

No, indeed, and I didnt comment on whether it was deserved or not, Mark. But if she needed a wild card so there would be one less available to other players, which is correct. Not that she would be taking it from them, but the pie would have one less slice for others to eat.

Wimbledon gave 5 WC's initially to Brits last year, one to Serena and two later allocations (which I am too lazy to look up). I don't think any deserving Brits are likely to miss out if Emma needs one.

Hopefully so - presumably they will still give them to the winners of Surbiton and Ilkley (are those the only womens ITF100 events this grass season), so leaving 6 to play with.

I can see what Jon's trying to say. If we have no top 100 WTA players we will have our top 6 ladies all with a very strong claim for Wimbledon wild cards plus potentially Lily and Sonay, depending how they progress between now and July. It's most unlikely that the AELTC will allocate all 8 cards to British players so that means at least one or two will miss out who might have benefited if the likes of Emma and Harriet could qualify in their own right. This doesn't mean Emma wouldn't be worthy of a WC - just that it would be nice if she didn't need one.

I can't recall any time where a top 200 ranked British woman singles player hasn't got a Wimbledon MD WC if needed. If it has happened it will be very unusual.

Currently though we have 7 ranked in the top 200. Though with lots of points due to drop off by 19/06 ( the last ranking date before Wimbledon WCs should be announced ) just 4 are actually guaranteed to still be top 200 then ( and fairly comfortably so ) - Emma, Katie S, Jodie and Harriet.

But hopefully Katie B, Heather and Lily can gather enough points to at least maintain top 200 rankings ( Katie B and Heather in particular don't need very many ) and thus maintain good cases for MD WCs.

But if we have no direct MD entrants that would be 7 aspirants which as folk have indicated may be more than will be available.

Sonay has big ITF W25 titles points to come off so she looks an outsider to be up with the others' rankings. Though feel free to add to the crowd! And Fran's ongoing progress will at least be interesting.
