Meanwhile over in San Diego a Brit is going about their business quietly. No, not Katie Boulter, this is the college thread after all.
Oliver Tarvet is ranked 5 in the Feb 20 NCAA Div 1 rankings with 2 Top 10 ranked wins during February and on Thursday defeating the only player to have got the better of Fearnley during February.

Playing at the 1 position, Oliver is 9-1 in dual and 20-3 for the season as a whole. He's 8-2 against ranked opponents. In doubles he's 8-0 in dual, playing mostly at the 2 position and 12-1 for the season.

Also Ola Pitak at 116 in singles. It was a bit of a surprise to see her name as I hadn't been aware she had stayed with Alabama for a third graduate year.

I'll never understand college rankings. I thought Millie would have moved up to #2 being unbeaten with 4 wins over the weekend and current #2 ranked Reese Brantmeier out for the year with a torn meniscus. But Reese gained ranking points and Millie lost ranking points. All Millie's opponents were unranked so it seems in the NCAA rankings its better not to play rather than play unranked opponents. confuse

In doubles 36 is Grace Piper rather than Parker.

In calculating the rankings players are awarded points for their best 10 wins so once you have beaten 10 ranked players beating un ranked players will not affect your ranking one way or the other. Losing to un ranked players would adversely affect the rankings calculation.
The other thing that can affect your own ranking is if some of the players you beat or lose to may later on see swings in their rankings . Or of course if other players below you then get wins over higher ranked players .Or players above you lose to lower ranked players. Its over complicating it but thats the way it is.

Intro: The objective of the ITA Rankings is to accurately reflect team and player performance occurring solely within sanctioned college tennis dual matches and tournaments and solely within one given academic season. The ITA Rankings Algorithm is based on an accumulation of win points and loss points, accounting for a win-loss record, the strength of schedule, and the depth/significance of wins and losses. As the season progresses, the value of each win and loss adjusts to reflect the most recent ranking of the opponent.

Thanks Lambda - does anyone know, or can advise, when does the NCAA finals take place (May rings a bell?) and when is the field set for those? I know there are individual championships but there is an NCAA team event before as well, isnt there?

The various ITA events seem to this season have much more structure towards providing qualifiers for the NCAA - maybe thats always been the case, but it seems that the process and linkage (narrative) seems clearer this season, with a move of dates to accommodate?

I may have got this wrong, and EP or Danny will correct, but I think the championships in November are a different competition. Players qualify for those championships through individual knock-out events and the end of year championships in May players qualify for by ranking through all individual and team college ITA sanctioned events.

It is unclear! I read this and it appeared to be highlighting a change of date - but maybe not!

ntroduction

In January of 2023, the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee approved a two-year pilot program to hold the NCAA Division I Mens and Womens Individual Championships in the fall of 2024 and 2025. The ITA office, along with the NCAA Singles & Doubles Pathway Task Force (consisting of ITA member coaches), has worked diligently over the past several years to create a clearly defined and accessible pathway for student-athletes to earn entry into the fall 2024 and fall 2025 NCAA Individual Championships.

The major components of that pathway, including defining the qualifying events, establishing the dates and locations for those events and declaring the number of qualifiers from each event, have now been finalized and are listed below. Specific selection criteria have yet to be finalized for these events and will be shared once they become available.
