I think thats a good draw for the Brits on the whole. 5 all Britsh matches so should be plenty of action till at least Thursday.

Mackin's draw is possibly the toughest as Haase played well in Bournemouth last week.

Quite hopeful for Andy Kennaugh's chances this week.

Good draw for Colin, Lee Childs' big serve won't be any like as effective as usual on the slow clay in Scotland. There'll be lots of support for him this week so hopefully he can have a good run. Hopefully he can win in straights and then Bloomfield on clay will be a similar match - Richard's big serve will be nulified by the clay and so Colin would have to overcome Bloomers' consistent baseline game.

Martin Lee's rd1 match is tricky. Sirianni is a good player - he beat Max Mirnyi at the Aussie Open a couple of years ago, he's been ranked inside the top 200.

A great chance for Madeline's favourite, Iain Atkinson to gain his first ranking points.. The GB no1 U18 player has been given a wildcard and against an unranked qualifier, this has got to be his best chance yet. Hopefully Slabba's friend from Sutton, Konstantinos Kalaitzis can continue his great run here having fought through the qualifying and pick up his 2nd ranking point.

I don't see many of the higher ranked Brits winning through rd1. Andy Kennaugh's opponent has beaten Jamie Baker twice and is a quality clay court player.

Actually if you look, Kalaitzis beat a foreigner which means that this week is already better than last from a British perspective. Well done to him, that's another ranking point as well which is great.

Does anyone know what happened to Martin Lee? He was a set and 5-4 up against an Australian qualifier and retired. That suggests something pretty bad must have happened, else I imagine he'd have tried to at least finish off the second set.

Alan Mackin had an awful day too - losing 2 & 2 to Haase, ranked nearly 200 places below him.

What a dreadful day for the Brits in Edinburgh.

Performance of the day must go to Matt Smith, the only Brit to beat a foreigner. He beat Danish qualifier Jacob Melskens 6-4, 6-2. Melskens is ranked nearly 500 places lower than Smith but then again it's a clay-court tournament so no victory can be taken for granted.

I'll find out what Martin Lee's injury was, today. It must have been quite serious for him to retire when 5-4 up in set 2, if it had only been a minor strain he probably would have carried on just to see if he could nick the next game. I hope it's not his old knee injury returning to plague him

as he's been in such great form lately.

As steven said, Alan Mackin's result was one of the worst. Robin Haase beat Matt Smith last week but for Mackin to lose 2 and 2 was pretty bad especially as clay is his favourite surface and he was on home soil.

A friend of mine went to the tournament yesterday so hopefully I'll be able to pass on some info on some of the matches.

Thankfully we're guaranteed a Brit in the quarters as I can't really see any other British player winning. Playing opponents who are well in the top 350 will be great experience for the 18 year olds, Kalaitzis and Atkinson, it'll be interesting to see how well they do. Smith has a chance of making the quarters but Sarstrand beat Auckland 1 and 1 last week and reached the final.

By the way, what are player representatives, Ed Seator and Konstantinos Kalaitzis are the chosen ones this week ?

What an amazing victory for 18 year old Iain Atkinson, wow !!! Makes a change to see a shock victory for a British player. Iain only won his first world ranking points yesterday and he's just beaten the world no 332, in straight sets for the loss of just 5 games. Recouderc is in pretty decent form having beaten the 7th seed in rd1 and he dominated the GB 1 satellite earlier this year. The Edinburgh tournament committee are very pleased with themselves right now - Iain was a good choice of wildcard.

Big congratulations to Matt Smith, after he split up with his long-time girlfriend at the end of 2005, he's had a pretty rough time. He reached a 15K semi at the beginning of April so hopefully things are starting to look up for him just in time for the grass-court season.

Even though he lost, 18 year old Konstantinos Kalaitzis did well to take a set off a player ranked 266 in the world and Konstantinos is only ranked 1526. David Brewer got off to a flier, it looks like he ran out of steam in the following two sets.

Good win for Lee Childs. I'm surprised he's doing this well on clay which is definately his least favourite surface by far. Bloomfield's an in-form player so that's a shock win.

So 3 Brits in the last 8 and we're guaranteed a Brit in the last 4 as Atkinson and Childs play each other !!!

It was actually just 5 games which Iain lost, in my excitement when I typed out the result, I hit 3 instead of 2 !!
