Emily missed 5 individual break points at 2-2* and after recovering from *0-40 in the next game only to miss a game point and get broken, it ran away a little bit.

Loses 6-3 6-1

Emily is seeded 2 in the doubles with Erjavec, but they have a very tricky opener against Kromacheva and Shymanovich. Irina is by my reckoning the second highest ranked doubles player in the entire draw and has made the final in 8 of her last 9 events...

Does indeed look tricky. Bolsova and Masarova are the top seeds, fresh from their defeat in Glasgow

L16:- Veronika Erjavec (SLO) / Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) CR354 (186+168) [2] v Irina Khromacheva (***) / Iryna Shymanovich (***) CR524 (136+388)

Iryna won her singles fairly easily, but Irina only came through after 2 hours 42mins, and there were two MTO's in quick succesion at the start of the final set (which she bageled). So it will be a delayed start for Emily and Veronika.

14 degrees, raining. All 4 well wrapped up. Not very Spanish!

Play suspended at *0-4. Long road back tomorrow, not a particularly competitive opening.

Yes, looks horrible. And they've gone off with the score at *0-4 and the rain increasing.

Court wasn't fit for play from the start. And the local forecast is bad for tomorrow I am told.

Finally back on court. The deficit was too much though, and the first set has gone 1-6

Had a couple of break points there to try and get into the match, a poor return error from Erjavec on deuce though

*1-2

Lost all 5 deuce points - 4 in the second set which would have totally changed the dynamic of the match. But there were just too many errors on big points, and their opponents were far more dialed in and clinical when they got their opportunities.
