2022 October Player of the Month Vote

Here we go - I will leave this up for 48 hours so it will close Tuesday evening around 18.40 - still playing around with timings!

Remember one vote per person and if you can, tell us who you voted for and why - it makes it much more interesting!

And I wont pressurise or hassle too much this time!

1. Giles Hussey - for reaching the final in Sheffield, winning the doubles in Sheffield and Glasgow and breaking into the Top 500

2. Arthur Fery - for winning the M25 Sheffield unseeded (beating Giles in the final), RU M25 Sunderland and winning the M25 Sunderland doubles title also.

3. Katie Swan - for winning the W60 Trnava(1) title, beating both #1 and #2 seeds, extending her unbeaten record in ITF finals to twelve, and reaching a new CH#118 ranking.

4. Josh Goodger - for winning the 15k singles titles in Ithaca, despite being unranked, never ranked and having had to come through qualis

5. Jan Choinski - for winning the Challenger title in Campinas, Brazil, having come through qualifying to even get into the tournament in the first place

6. Harry Wendelken - for winning his first pro title at the M25 Sunderland, unseeded.

7. Kristina Paskauskas - winning her first 15k singles in Monastir, Tunisia, unseeded beating a seed on the way - still a junior

8. Imogen Haddad - winner of the J2 Nonthaburi, Thailand. Born 2005, only the second girl this year to win an event of this stature on foreign soil

9. Oliver Bonding - winner of back to back J3 singles and doubles title (2 of each) in South Africa - only born in 2007 - he was JWR 2398 at the end of 2021 - and is 330 or so now, and rising sharply

10. Freya Christie and Ali Collins for winning the W60 doubles title in Glasgow, which will take Freya to a new CH of around 176 and Ali to a new CH of around 169

11. Yuriko Lily Miyazaki - winning the W60 in Glasgow unseeded, beating 3 seeded Brits in doing so, her first W60 title.

12. Aidan McHugh - Winner of the Glasgow 25k - which is especially worth a mention as it's his home city - I like people winning their home events - the crowd like it too :)

13. Lauryn John-Baptiste - winning consecutive W15 doubles titles in Heraklion

14. Emily Appleton for coming through qualifying to win the W25 at Loughborough in a breakthrough week.

15. William Jansen - winning his first senior title by taking the doubles in M15 in Kuwait despite still being a junior.

16. Julian Cash/Henry Patten - for winning a further two Challenger titles in October but more importantly for both entering the top 100 doubles

Arthur Fery , Oliver Bonding, Lauryn all were on my radar. I like to typically vote for a winner and someone who has performed more than just one week in the month - not won, but performed. All the above tick those boxes. But Julian and Henry also did and also have had a season to remember, so get my vote

Certainly quite a month of break out performances and titles by players generally further down the food chain

Ultimately I have been eyeing a clear top two for me. With a nod to Julian & Henry in their two challenger titles this month going to propel them into the top 100 on Monday, these two with very different profiles are Emily App and Oliver.

Was super to see such a week for Emily, after years of relative trials and tribulations, and that week in itself is enough for my PoM vote. Certainly comes up on my radar way before say 2 weeks of W15 doubles titles, sorry Lauryn.

Was tempted to vote for Miyazaki for a great result at W60 Glasgow. Instead it was the quality of the opposition at W60 Trnava that made my mind up, where Swan beat the WR#86 in a brilliant 3 sets final that went right to the wire.

Difficult choice this month. So many worthy of their nomination. I'm not going to vote for the ones I nominated though and had trouble deciding between Katie and Emily for their performances which both exceeded my expectations.

In the end I went for Emily.

It's great to see so many unfamiliar names making their mark, but when choosing a POTM it's hard to look beyond the players I actually know and enjoy watching. I agree Katie was a contender following those brilliant wins at Trnava. If only she had stayed fit and been able to go deep in another tournament she'd have been a shoe in. However, Emily's win last week was so brilliant and so unexpected I can't resist voting for her. Hope she can get another win or two this week and end the season back in the top 500.
