A report by Stu Fraser in today's Times, which it claims is an exclusive. It is being organised by Tennis Australia & will be held in various cities across Australia before the Oz Open next January. It will be called the United Cup (imaginative!) & its precise format has yet to be confirmed, though it is expected to involve at least 16 nations competing in a round-robin group stage followed by a knock-out stage. The article notes that the new event is essentially a revival of the Hopman Cup, which ran for 30 years from 1989 to 2019, although on a far larger scale, & that ranking points will be awarded to both male & female players for singles victories. It adds that the Hopman Cup was suddenly dropped two years ago to make way for the ATP (ergo men-only) Cup, which never really caught on - arguably because Covid-19 brought everything to a grinding halt!
Thanks SC - so it is the end of the ATP Cup, and that in itself is good news. The Hopman Cup was always a good season opener IMO and it is good something like it is back. Good stuff

I think we have discussed before how Tennis was going in the opposite direction to other sports. Athletics, Swimming and Triathlon have all added mixed events while Tennis stupidly dropped theirs, stupid.

Re mixed events in general in sport, It kind of depends to me on how professionally they are taken as to whether I care, ie as long as not just jolly add-ons to the program with a school sports day feel.
But yes the Hopman Cup was pretty good and the ATP Cup for starters far too much like the current Davis Cup Finals format. Whereas although it can be a good watch I have never taken tennis mixed doubles in general very seriously.
Another new mixed event is the 16 player World Tennis League being held just before Xmas in Dubai - pretty much the top 10 of mens and womens game playing in 4, 4 player mixed teams, 8 men and 8 women
Hopman Cup mark 2 - based on this will Cam get us in? Or Cam/Emma joint ranking? If at all...
UNITED CUP TO LAUNCH 2023 SEASON
The worlds best players will unite to compete side by side at the United Cup, a stunning new team event set to launch the global tennis season in 2023.
The United Cup, an ATP-WTA event presented in partnership with Tennis Australia, will showcase equality at the highest level of the sport, with mixed teams from 18 countries competing across Brisbane, Perth and Sydney over 11 days, from Thursday 29 December to Sunday 8 January 2023.
The power and passion of team competition will come to life as the players unite to represent their countries with national pride and USD $15 million in prize money on the line. In a world first for a mixed team event, 500 Pepperstone ATP Rankings and WTA rankings points are also up for grabs.
The first 12 countries will qualify via the six highest-ranked No. 1 players that enter, on both the ATP Tour and Hologic WTA Tour. The remaining six countries will qualify according to the best combined ranking of their respective No. 1 mens and womens players. Teams will feature three to four players from each Tour.
Each city will host two groups of three countries, competing in a round-robin format, with ties comprising two ATP and two WTA singles matches, and one mixed doubles match. Each City Final winner will advance to the United Cup Final Four in Sydney (6-8 January), with the next best performing team from the group stages completing the quartet.
Someone on TF has worked out who would get in as of now - given their isnt much of the season left for the top players, this could well not change
As I read it, if Djoko gets in, GB won't get in as it stands (we will be 19th). If Djoko isnt allowed in, Italy will move into the top 6 ATP, meaning GB will move into 18th place overall. We need a 6 ranking place swing on Belgium to qualify above them or 9 on Japan. Would take a big week by Cam in paris to get a few places and I am not sure Emma has any chance to improve her ranking , so it looks like it will come down to the little matter of Djoko
Top 6 ATP ranked players, top 6 womens (happily for this event, the two lists dont duplicate)
So if we take into account current rankings: ATP 1 Spain (#1 Alcaraz) 2 Norway (#3 Ruud) 3 Greece (#5 Tsitsipas) 4 Germany (#6 Zverev) 5 Serbia (#7 Djokovic) - if hes allowed 6 Canada (#9 FAA) - (alt Italy (#12 Sinner) (in case Djoko isnt allowed to play?)
WTA 7. Poland (#1 Swiatek) 8. Tunisia (#2 Jabeur) 9. USA (#3 Pegula) 10. France (#6 Garcia) (Romania (#10 Halep) - will probably still be suspended) 11. Switzerland (#13 Bencic) 12. Brazil (#15 Haddad Maia) (Spain and Badosa already would be in if Alcaraz takes his place, as he is higher).
In terms overall strength, Norway, Greece and Tunisia really arent going to be up to overall standard. This is a 4 singles (2 M, 2W) event, and they all only have 1 world class player. Whether they (or indeed all others) enter, remains to be seen.
Obviously Russia and Belarus arent invited - but the event has ranking points as both countries players could enter other ATP and WTA events at the same time and thus it enables points to still be awarded for this event, unlike Wimbledon
As this thread appears to be a follow-up to the one I started at the end of September on the basis of a Stuart Fraser article in The Times ("New mixed tennis tournament to be held"), I'm going to merge it into this one.

ah ha - I thought there was something but couldnt find it! It is now officially called the United Cup, SC, in case you want to name the thread

You didn't look quite hard enough: it was only on the second page of this thread, but it retains the name you gave it because of how I merged it.

Apparently the British team for the United cup at present is; Cam Norrie, Dan Evans, Jan Choinski, Jonny OMara, Harriet Dart, Katie Swan, Anna Brogan and Ella McDonald. Quite a random team but Im sure it will be a great experience for the players!
