Week 39 - ITF W15 Monastir, Tunisia Hard

Marni on the receiving end, losing the first 8 games. There was a MTO at 3-4* in the second and Marni has just broken back.

Abigail could have signed in for the WTA event and got in the draw, had 3 byes. Really surprised given there's a 15k running next week in the same place none of the 500-800 players thought they'd give it a go for a guaranteed point and some decentish prize money.

It's a very poor draw for the 15k next week. Only 20 players left in the acceptance list for a 48 qualifying draw.

Abigail withdrew a couple of weeks ago so has missed out on both a weak draw in the 15k and a spot in the WTA250 qualifying, which pays almost as much as reaching the W15 final

Abigail doesn't meet the requirements of being ranked 750 or higher or being a WTA full member to be able to enter a WTA250.

You can enter on site if you don't meet those criteria (or top 500 for the 500s and up I think it is), just not enter in advance.

Applies to on site alts too

After the Freeze Deadline (see Section V.A.1.b.iii(a)),
players who are not entered but sign-in on site will be
accepted based on their current WTA Singles Ranking
or Singles Special Ranking (subject to the ranking
requirements detailed in Section III.A.1.d.vii);

Correct, and the point is there weren't enough ranked players who meet the conditions to fill the draw. So the tournament is able to fill spaces by giving out wildcards to non-eligible players as they wish.

Lohoff, Lechemia and the Tunisian wildcard are in the draw for that reason, and the final 3 spots could have been filled in the same way. Or would have, if anyone else had signed in. When there are gaps it is permitted for events to give out additional wildcards to fill spots.

There is absolutely nothing to stop any player ranked outside the top 750 signing in on site for a WTA event, it's just usually incredibly unlikely they would get in after you've gone through (i) advanced entry alternates who pitch up, and if you run out of those, (ii) non-advanced entered players who sign in who are accepted on WTA ranking within the same advance entry criteria you state, and then (iii) still have extra open spots after the initial wildcard allocation is used up.

It's just bizarre in this case they couldn't fill the draw as the 15k is taking place at the same site, so it's odd noone would have noticed sign in was drawing to a close with gaps remaining.

Correct, but you were talking about entering/signing in which she couldn't do.

Lambda, you missed the second half of that paragraph of the rulebook which goes on to say

"or if no WTA Singles Rankings, according to the following order:
· Player with the most WTA singles ranking points;
· Player with the highest WTA Doubles Ranking;
· Player with the most WTA doubles ranking points; and
· Player who is drawn randomly."

So any player can sign in as an on-site alternate, ranked or not - and in this case could have got in without needing a wild card. I assume the three QWC's had already been given out.

No Addict they need to be given a wildcard. As they don't meet the entry criteria Lambda says they have to be given an "Additional Wildcard". The list of criteria you mention still requires you to be a Full Member.

"At Tournaments where there are no on-site Alternates, openings in the
qualifying and doubles draws may be filled by additional Tournament Wild Cards (Additional Wild Cards). These Wild Cards will count towards a players yearly allotment of Wild Cards.

Players and teams waiting to get into the draw as Additional Wild Cards must:

a. Sign in with the Supervisor or a WTA Operations staff member by
the Qualifying Sign-In Deadline or Doubles Sign-In Deadline, as
applicable;...."

So they have to sign in on site, but aren't "On Site Alternates". Which is a bit confusing I admit. Lambda is correct someone like Abigail can't enter in advance or sign in as an "on site alternate", but she *can* sign in as an Additional Wildcard requestee. And because there were spaces here it would have been granted.

But anyway, doesn't really matter, noone did and the 3 byes remain!
