I remember when I was about 10 years old, I went on holiday to the west coast Scotland. It was my mother's favourite place to visit and relax after getting away from the stress of being a teacher. We were out for a drive one day, visiting one of the deep water lochs when to our surprise, the Royal Yacht Britannia appeared around the headland. There was a small gathering of people waiting where the yacht was going to moor itself, so we decided to join them.

Not long after, The Queen disembarked and walked along the road in front of us towards her awaiting car. A woman about 2 places to my left was holding a small dog in her arms. The Queen stopped and spoke to her for about 30 seconds, just asking questions about what breed of dog it was etc. I was struck at how 'normal' she was having been brought up to revere the Royal Family by my parents. In the end, she walked past me at just a couple of feet away and I remember feeling amazed that I was able to get so close. It is a childhood memory that has always stayed with me.

I've been travelling, so only just heard the news. More wondering whether she was ill, or just died unexpectedly (as much as it can be unexpected for someone her age).

I'm not a royalist, but do appreciate her service, and am a bit nervous about Charles being King.

I was wondering about that too. Her mother lived to be 100 (at least) and she was a smoker, as were her sister and father (who both died younger). She seemed so well and had always lived moderately and cleanly (as far was we know). She was quite poorly with Covid early this year, could have have weakened her perhaps......

I actually like quite like Charles and alot of his views,,,, organic farming etc. His vision in creating the Highgrove garden .

I am sad at her passing, she was so dedicated to her role for so many years. I also am wondering about her last illness, it must have been sudden otherwise all the family would have been there.

An amazingly long reign by a monarch who was viewed with so much respect and admiration around the world.
Very pleased that despite her recent mobility issues and obvious more frail look, she managed to maintain a good degree of privacy. And that she had her family with her (well, most). And hopefully her dogs too.

Im with my family in Mallorca, for a few days, at the moment , since yesterday.

I was interested to see to what extent it would be a news story somewhere like this - no one really has
Mentioned it at all, literally no one , so clearly it isnt something of real interest here. By people, i mean it hasnt
Been mentioned to us at least by anyone at the hotel or waiters or shopworkers. Maybe it is a topic of conversation in more social settings.

On TV, we have CNN in the room and on there it is wall to wall- there is no other news topic. As I wrote, they are talking about the Privy Council accession meeting today and now just moving forward ver to talking about the atmosphere in London.

As a general thing, I should say I am not a royalist at all but Im saddened by the passing of a person who served us loyally and well.

In answer to you John, the French have a reasonable amount of coverage - the newspapers have it on front page, are covering the funeral etc. I'm in the middle of nowhere so haven't seen that many people since it happened but one old woman mentioned it yesterday. I'm also getting lots of Whatsapp messages of condolence from Middle Eastern acquaintances, in particular.

I don't follow the Spanish press or TV that much but I have heard it talked about on the radio. It is certainly a topic discussed among the expat community here though.

It is a observation.

There is only so much Royal news I can take. I would like the media to return to some sort of normality, but have no idea on the rules or when this will be and was hoping someone could shed some light.
