As she's just won a J1 singles event (and the doubles), which is pretty rare and top level, and taken over the number one slot, Ella MacDonald deserves a thread of her own

Born in 2005, Ella is the daughter of ex-pro footballer, Neil MacDonald (Preston, Everton, Newcastle.....)

She's been one of the LTA detected players for a while, training at the Stirling academy

Currently ranked JWR 36, she's our top girl player, following the title in Durban

In adults, she hasn't really made her mark yet althougg her highpoint was coming within 3 points of beating Coco Vandeweghe in Wimbledon qualifiers, having come through pre-qualis to earn a wildcard place

Quite a tall girl, lefty, with well-placed ground shots, a powerful serve, and a pretty calm temperament, there's a lot to like there.

Welcome to the adult rankings to Ella, who now has three counters, and 7 ranking points, and is WTA 1251

Having made the QFs in Sharm this past week, she will rise even higher when those points go on next Monday

This is the week that Ella (age 17) breaks into the top-1000 at WTA 927, up 184 places

All thanks to excellent weeks at Shrewsbury and Loughborough, with wins against two top-400 players

WTA rankings 10th June 2024

Ella posts a new CH at WR 807

(Next week should be more welcome news too....)

Ella has had a rather choppy time since the last post 18 months ago

Things didn't quite go in a straight line

But she's won her first W15 singles title in Tunisia very recently, and has 5 doubles title this year (and one from last year)

And is still only 18

 Yes, she will be top 500 once her second Roehampton QF points add. Currently live 491.

She will be our 13th player in the top 500.

Ella retired in her SF in Santarem in week 37 and has withdrawn from tournaments in weeks 38 and 39, but is entered for the W35 in Reims in week 40
