Amarni Banks

Marni has a lot of supporters, and has been a real tennis talent (IMO) for some time now. Aggressive game. Lots of rackethead speed. Spent a lot of time in Spain, honing her game. Based at the NTC for a while. Now back at Bolton tennis academy full-time, I believe.

Rather hampered by injury in the last few years, though. Which has really held her back.

But as of 25/07/22, she's finally got her WTA singles ranking (WTA 1526)

Maybe this will be her time to kick on...... smile

And just to add her victory, one day later, in two nice sets, over the top Q seed, ranked WTA 525

QR2: BANKS, Amarni (GBR) WTA 1526 def LEE, Pei-Chi (TPE) (q1) 525 6-4 6-1

The WTA ranking is new, as of today, 25/07/22

As ref too, Marni is 19, born 2002 (like Emma and Sonay), late, in October

Great to see from Marni.

As I said in the Nottingham thread, after encouraging junior performances, she was starting to look really good in seniors in early 2020 before the pandemic hit and then her injury issues.

ADD:

And then goes even further !!!

QF: BANKS, Amarni (GBR) Q UNR 1526 def RAINA, Ankita (IND) (4) 340 1-6 6-2 7-5

THe summer keeps getting better and better for Marni - she's now cracked the top-1000 in terms of ranking, and made the final or the 25k at Roehampton:

SF: BANKS, Amarni (GBR) WC 894 def CHONG, Eudice (HKG) (3) 300 5-7 6-2 6-3

There still seems to be certain injury concerns but, fingers crossed, she'd now stringing together a lot of consistent wins, including several top-500, top-400 and today's top-300 win (just)

Still only 19 .....

ADD: She lost her final very easily, however, against XinyuGao

Marni has had stop-start tennis for all her career to date as far as I can see.....

Injury city

But if she could ever be injury free for a period, it would be brilliant to see what she could produce

Today, at Nottingham 25k, Marni beat the second seed, WTA 221, in two easy sets - 6-4 6-3

It does feel like we always have a lot of players that are stopped for periods with injury. It also feels like it is the ones we often think can go far in the game. Just wish all our players could get a good run of injury free events and play a bit more often. These youngsters with their victories today look to have a lot of ability and talent.

Marni is now the 9th highest ranked player not to have played in a WTA tournament

tennisabstract.com/reports/WTA_BestWhoHavent.html

Perhaps that will change come June, where she might get into an event?

Is it just me who has a good feeling about this girl in 2024?

No, I've had a good feeling for years. Pretty slow burner, what with her injury issues, but if she can keep fairly fit and well ...

For now she is GB #10, just as I predicted for this year end. Don't ask about my others!

I was looking at her points calculation yesterday and she has 12 counters where she has only 9 points or less and not really any points to defend until April.
Im not sure if she plans on competing again this year but if she could hit the ground running in January/February in the 4 British tournaments then stay fit to play another few then she would be ranked 175 and beyond come March.
I attended Shrewsbury and watched 4 of her matches and she has some serious weapons with no real weaknesss (apart from injuries)
Good luck in 2024

I watched Marni at Surbiton and Roehampton this year and yes she has great potential. I'll be looking out for her this year and hoping to see a run of results and a rise up the rankings.
