Week 21 - French Open (Roland-Garros) - Paris, France (clay) - women's qualifying

It's obviously a positive that Harriet and Heather, who are often borderline, have made the cut, but we're certainly not used to only having two in the women's Q draw, it's often nearer 7, and even one of the two was of course a surprise recent gain.

Probably won't be the busiest thread in the world, but let's see how they get on, and good luck to both.

Lily and Ylina met in Grenoble this year with Lily winning 2 & 4
Katie and Viktoriya met in the Australian Open this year with Viktoriya winning 0 & 5

Two of the other women who could be or would be here in quals too (Fran and Katie B) are injured.

Yes, nice that we have 3 in the main draw.

Swan just 1-2 weeks from a bout of Covid at the Aussie Open, last minute arrival, virtually no prep, won Q1, but found Q2 just too much.

Tomova hasn't exactly been tearing it up on the clay since losing in the final at W80 Oeiras 10th April.

Hopefully Swan has recovered from the injury at W100 Wiesbaden on 5th May having beaten the 3rd seed Udvardy the day before.

It is the fewest women in RG qualifying since 2016 when we didn't have any women in qualifying, though we did have 4 in the main draw that year. For RG we have averaged 4 women in the qualifying draw over the last 10 years, which is what we would have if Fran and Katie B were not injured. We tend to have a pattern where we have few women in qualifying in even numbered years, with the exception of 2014.

0 women in RG q - 2016
2 - 2022
3 - 2018, 2020
4 - 2013
5 - 2015, 2017, 2019
6 - 2014, 2021

Yes, with Wimbly coming up, and Katie's history, that's my main concern, tbh

Amazing performance to *5-1, with a gorgeous drop shot return/lob combo to get the second break.

But an excruciatingly tight game to be broken to love.

6-3 5-2*

Twice Lily sets up match point with a great forehand winner, only to fluff putaways at the net, the first a short volley is netted, the second s smash is angled wide.

No mistakes next time, a much more confident service game and she takes a great, and slightly unexpected I think, 6-3 6-3 win.
