Umpiring Bloopers

I am sure a lot of these go on and don't get highlight, but this one looks like a shocker.

Stephen Diez is on MP in the 2nd set.  Brouwer serve is called out and the Umpire calls Game, Set & Match.  Brouwer asks the umpire to look at the mark but he clearly looks at the wrong one - a fact BOTH players seem to be pointing out.  Even the line judge who is much closer gets the wrong mark - by some distance.

The 'Out' call is wrongly overturned and Brouwer ends up winning in 3 sets.

You only have to look at the serve and then where the umpire is pointing to see that he is looking in completely the wrong place.

Edit

Should add that this is in Houston ATP 250.

Goodness, that's a howler

I think automated linecalls are going to be introduced for clay courts soon anyway - it's been so good for hard courts and no reason why not for clay - I know there is some worry that players will see an actual mark that looks different and argue, but it's 100% neutral and avoids this sort of major mess

Do you think the guy who lost could bring a court claim against the umpire? (And the ATP vicariously?) Doing a job well below the standard of a reasonable competent umpire with clear causation of loss? Would be worth a shot....

I usually have a lot of sympathy for umpires getting treated unreasonably by players for making tiny mistakes (or often after not making a mistake at all) but this is a shocker. I'm also a bit surprised Brouwer didn't concede if he clearly knew it was the wrong mark, but he's not the main one at fault here.

Diez ended up getting a lucky loser place, so that's something, but it doesn't make it right.

I wonder if there was some 'influence' over the LL place after this event. It wouldn't surprise me.

I also caught this on twitter. When you slow the video down you can see the Umpire isn't even looking at the direction where the ball bounced so isn't going to have a clue on which mark to pick. Very strange to be so certain on a call he was obviously guessing on.

Yeah, it's a blooper, but Felix has to learn to listen to the score after each point.

It's a classic. Three set match. Everyone makes mistakes. Including umpires. (Maybe especially at lower level?) Almost impossible to query the score and go back over each point when you're way past it. I feel sorry for him but he needed to have paid attention and queried it after he announced the 15-0.

actually having watched it I agree with you CD - why on earth didnt they say anything at the time? It was a mistake but Felix probably has himself to blame. Plus he should have beaten this guy anyway.
