RE: Greatest Players of All Time - according to Tennis Abstract

We have player No 91 and it is Ann Jones  That means Virginia Wade must rate higher. I would certainly say Ann was our most consistent player of the late 50's through the sixties.

I think what is also worthy of note re Ann Jones is she was also world table tennis champion and arguably better at table tennis.

I think 91 is about right for Ann, I would rate Ginny slightly higher. I think Ginny will be next Brit up around 80, Andy will then follow - Indy and I speculated somewhere but Im currently thinking 50-60, and Fred Perry Im going to reckon 20-30. But those will no doubt be very wrong .

 Thanks Gameover

Out of interest, would you / did you have her on your list? I havent tried to produce my own for comparison, yet, I might well do soon - but I think you said you had?

I am not sure whether she would make my top 100 of all time, largely as I always felt she underachieved against her undoubted talent. But it feels like there are lots of this sort of one slam winning player out there over the years, so not sure whether I would elevate her above the rest?

Some of Jeff's earlier methodologies are shown here and it explains how and why Woz comes so high.

It may also give us a decent glimpse on some of the post 1970's players yet to come (womens game at least!!)

 Hi Jon

Yes I did have Caroline on my list. I'm not sure I would rate her higher than Simona Halep of current players. Caroline never got beyond the 4th round of Wimbledon in 13 attempts  and appeared in 3 Grand Slam finals winning 1. Simona  has made the semis or better in all the grand Slams with 2 wins in 5 GS finals.

Chang is an interesting one - he achieved an incredible feat at a young age, who can forget the win at the French over Lendl and the famous underarm serve, and then Edberg of course.

But I am not sure his career ever delivered on that early promise, sadly. I personally wouldnt have had him in my top 50 men / top 100 overall but it is probably very thin margins in this assessment!!

I still need to do my list!!

What Chang achieved in 1989 French is very similar really to Emma Raducanu in New York last year. We forget, history can repeat itself

We have no. 88 who is Mary Jo Fernandez She is on my list. Never quite won a Grand Slam singles. However the match of hers I remember was in Paris 1993 when she recovered from  1-6 ,1-5  and 5 match points  down to beat Gabriela Sabatini in the quarter finals.
