Looks like favourable initial draws for both, especially Harriet. Didn't realise it was 3 rounds of quals again here, like in St P's, and here's their respective paths:
L. Samsonova (3) v K. Kucova S. Behbehani v H. Dart U. Eikeri v D. Parry E. Perez v M. Kostyuk (12)
A. Tomljanovic (6) v A. Li E. Yashina v H. Watson A. Gasanova v E. Ruse G. Olmos v J. Paolini (11)
I think it is 13 points and $2,000 (as opposed to 1 point and £1,500 for the loser). When the WTA actually publish the PDF of the draw it'll be on the bottom, so I tool the points from the rulebook.
I looked up Behbehani on the ITF website. It appears she has actually played two singles matches and two doubles matches before today. The only game she won was in Dubai doubles last year.
So she now has suffered 9 bagels and one breadstick. One of the singles losses was to Laura Deigman in 2015
Harriet won every return point and lost 4 points in total. The 2 she lost in the second were double faults so she could probably have had a golden set.
Sorry but that is an utter farce. Ok, good luck for Harriet and not her fault but for a match to be over within half an hour at this level even in qualifying is nothing short of a disgrace. Wildcards should not be awarded like this at this level tournament. It makes a mockery of qualifying when so many of the other matches are competitive.
There should be an investigation and frankly the organisers should be told that this is unacceptable. I wonder if there was any betting on this result?
Both Heather and Harriet got some luck with the first round draw but quite rightly will get more difficult from now. Of course I'm confident Heather will win her match later,

Yeah, it is a bit ridiculous. I mean there's barely any players from that gulf region, and I guess at least it was just a QWC, but it's pretty pointless, and it is basically free points (and effort preserved) to whoever is lucky enough to draw them. You see the likes of Putintseva-Zhang, Cristian-Siniakova, Li-Tomljanovic face off in Q1, all circa top 50 players, and then you see that. Still, as it were, someone had to draw her, and points-wise at least, I guess it kind of negates last weeks disappointment in St Pete's, after a fairly encouraging start to the year.
It is Samsonova up next for her, so yeah, a stark increase in opponent.
There's actually quite a lot of players, particularly from Northern Africa that could have been selected and have been in the past. And there's a few juniors from the region these days (the young girl who won a match at Australian Open for example). Even Al Nabhani who hasn't played this year and is a long way from the level she was at her best would have been a better choice.
