2022 January Player of the Month Vote

Here we go, the first vote of 2022 for Player of the Month.

VOTES will close at 6 pm MONDAY 31st January.

15 players are listed below; just vote for your favourite.

This year, no vote off's or finals or needing to get more than 50%; it is just one simple vote each month (unless more than 20 nominations, as that is the limit) and the winner takes it all, first past the post. In the event of a tie, the PoM Award will be shared.

Players this year will be listed in the order they are nominated - not alphabetically. I am not sure if being top of the list conveys any benefit to the person listed thus, but if it does, alphabetical order isnt a fair way to be rewarded; if there is a benefit to being at the top, the player getting nominated earliest deserves that benefit!

But there probably isnt one, but nonetheless: if you want to add to any comments below to support a player or if I have anything incorrect, please do comment.

I won't be giving updates other than time updates during the vote.

Many of these have a decent case and probably no one stands out; but I have plumped for Neal who starts the year with a new pairing, two titles and a QF in the Aussie Open

And remember the top 2 qualify for the Player of Season vote as of right, so second place is also worth getting!

I preferred a run-off if no-one gets more than 50%. But hey Jon's the boss.

No stand-out for me eirher this month. I would probably have gone for Hannah if she had won her final this week. As it is Neal edges it for me.

 Hi Indy

It was mainly thinking about time and how to make it all more manageable; having one single vote just reduces the level of work I put in, to be honest, and also the degree to which I end up checking and rechecking in my OCD mindset over the course of two votes or more. Hence, not having groups and not having more than one vote.

It probably isnt quite as pure and, hopefully, wont throw up any weird results, time will tell.

I suspect with this field, and from the early voting (7 in as I write, 5 players with votes) the 50% wont be breeched and we would have been into a run off, hopefully I wont come to regret the change!

And as the "boss" I can always change it going forwards if I feel like it!! I think I swapped and changed a couple of times last season and no doubt will again!

8 players with votes in the first 12 placed; this really could go anywhere

I agree with Indy - I'd have given it to Hannah if she'd won (doesn't really matter but it's Petits As, not A's - and it's not a plural of A, either, it's the word 'as', i.e. ace)

But I voted for Jack - only just turned 20, nice to see him back, winning a Challenger.

I did wonder whether 14 year old Mingge Xu should have been in the list after beating the 13th and top seeds in qualifying and winning her R1 match but maybe another month if she repeats and extends her results in another tournament or two.

Feel a little sorry for Dan Cox - I'd have gone for him next

I think all those with no votes actually deserve votes, I could make a case for any of them being in the top few.

It looks like, with 21 votes, 5 players are realistically chasing this now, all within 1 vote. This PoM vote usually ends up somewhere between 25 and 30 votes, so probably not enough room for those on zero or 1 vote currently to make up the ground.

Going to be a very interesting day 2 slow burn !

edit - PoM votes last season, 2021, drew 23 to 34 votes as a range. Weve just reached 23 so maybe up to 11 more to come?

player of the season reached the heady heights of 40 votes though , so we know there could enough people out there to push it further.
