Ryan Peniston

We don't seem to have a thread for Ryan(?) but he does fly under the radar a bit.

Ryan has had a sort of break through season but by hard graft and consistency rather than one big tournament.  He started the 2021 picking up points at futures levels and 5 or 6 times qualified for challengers but could not win rounds to add to the points.  His rise started in May when he won back to back futures events in Greece on Hard court to set himself up for the Grass season.  He was involved a lot with his highlight being a 2nd round at Queens qualies.  When the Grass was over he started pushing on going deeper in events on a regular basis.  Five times since he has made quarters in 80k Challengers and twice he has been runner up in 50K events (on Clay to boot!)

So with 10 double point scores on his record all from the end of May onwards Ryan will be well placed next year to only climb higher until the summer....the 2nd half of the year will be trickier!  He should be in or around Slam Qualies for 2022 and possible wild cards during the Grass season.  Having just turned 26 Ryan should be coming into his prime.  His matches can be a nightmare to follow (like all good Brits) with patches of games won or lost in unbroken sequence.  He has developed a knack of getting over the line though and as long as that happens more often than not, its not too bad biggrin

So Ryan ended 2021 as GB#8. Below is a breakdown of how he collected his 216 points.

So the thing that stands out is Ryan's stellar 2nd half of the year. A plethora of quarterfinals (5) along with a couple of finals, all at Challenger level, resulted in him catapulting up 100 places in the world rankings.  His points came from his travels to 11 countries and were spread pretty evenly amongst his counting tournaments, with no single tournament contributing more than 14% to his overall total.

I so enjoyed seeing Ryan beat Mannarino today at Surbiton, I wanted to update this thread.

Being local to me I have followed his career but it seems like just over a year ago, he was stuck at 350. He recorded wins against several 300+ in the rankings but when they were ranked higher than that, wins were few and far between. At the end of May 2021 he headed off to Greece for back to back 15k's and he won them both picking up 10pts for each. A win a Queens qualies followed on the grass and good performance at the qualies for Wimbledon too saw him emerge a different player afterwards. He started making quarters at challenger level, 6 times in fact over the next few months at 3 finals as well (2 in 50k's and 1 at 80k) 12 months on from that trip to Greece he has gone from 0 to 14 double figures rankings scores which has seen him rise into the top 200. A tribute to real consistency over the last 12 months.

Of course all these scores have to be defended and I thought to still be top 200 in a years time might actually be good work. Today he took a good scalp though and in doing so showed how strong his game is. Having had some of his success on Clay I was surprised how good his Grass game is. When you think of the childhood illness he fought through he is a really good story and I hope todays win can give him the confidence to go much higher still.

Ryan has lit up British tennis in June 2022

As of 27th June, he is now ATP 135 (having been 195 a month ago, at the end of May)

After Mannarino, as Shhh mentions above, he's also beaten:
Casper Ruud (ranked 5 in the world) and Cerundolo (WR 46) at Queens
Holger Rune (WR 29) and Martinez (WR 49) at Eastbourne
Vesely (76) at Nottingham

That's 6 top-100 wins - it's been a fest of great grasscourt tennis from Ryan

Ryan is near the top of the entry list for her Lexington Challenger in early August as he preps for the US Open qualies. Presumably too late to get his ranking high enough for a DA to main draw, given hes not playing in July.

Yes, far too late. Usually the MD entry is based on the rankings from 6 weeks before the first Monday of a Slam which would make it this coming Monday.

Hope she still does well at her Lexington Challenger

So it was nip and tuck, but in the end Ryan finishes the year as GB#6.

Ryan's escapades in the summer means, he clocks in the greatest percentage of points from grass tournaments (54.4%).  His success helped him break into the Top150, but with 185 points all coming in June, it represents almost 55% of his points, the highest monthly concentration of points amongst the Top10. Along with Andy and Liam, he was unable to secure a title in 2022, instead going 0 for 2.  Instead he found himself being a bit of a quarterfinal addict, collecting almost 60% of his points from that round.

Thanks.

I'm surprised to see Ryan going from picking up 44.9% of his points on hard in 2021, to 7.9% in 2022.

He doesn't appear to have carried much momentum after his astonishing grass season. Instead of pushing towards the top 100, his ranking declined.

Paulisi noted during US Open qualifying that Ryan seemed to be outpowered on hard courts by players of a similar ranking during the longer rallies that don't tend to happen on grass. I fear he might not make that much of an impression on the slower surfaces.
