Week 43 - (ITF W80) - Tyler, USA Hard

R1: DART, Harriet (GBR) 5 134 (CH=121 2019) v NARA, Kurumi (JPN) 179 (CH=32 2014)

They played in 2018 and 2019 with Harriet  losing in three both times.

Nara is exactly the type of player I imagine Harriet to be and have career wise. The odd Slam appearance and challenger title. Not surprised their previous match ups have been close.

I wouldn't mind Harriet ending up with much of Nara's record

Now 29, she spent over 5 years in the top 100 in her early to mid 20s with a CH 32 in 2014. Had 21 successive Slam singles MD appearances from the US Open 2013 to the US Open 2018 and has had 25 MD appearances in all with her best being 3 L32s.

When I looked at her career I did think Harriet would rip her right arm off to manage a CH of 32, not bad at all.  Sometimes a bit of perspective is needed. When we moan about players we need to take a step back and realise that being one of the best 150 tennis players in the world isn't too shoddy, most of us would be happy to be one of the best 150 in the world in our chosen careers. Yop 150 in the world in a team sport would get you into the World Cup or other top competition in that sport.

The above is exactly my point. However Indiana swooped right in and didnt understand that. As usual.

Nara is definitely one of those under the radar players who you don't realise has been as high, or been in as many Grand Slams, as they have actually been, so I understand why the comparison as a solid bigger ITF player able to pull off the odd good result in a big event, trouble the odd top player, would be made. As that's exactly where I see Harriet too. There's probably a few girls who topped out at 80ish who would fit the "exact" bill more exactly but I get the point! I suspect Harriet is unlikely to get anywhere near Nara's upside but you never know!

But anyway, it's been a bit of a gap for Harriet. Interested to see how she picks back up. Won't be the easiest transition from here to cold indoors in Midland next week either.

Loses the breaker 7-5

Nara hitting the ball very nicely, deep and side to side. Basic but effective.
