Sonay Kartal

Well, it's got to be done..... smile

Sonay Kartal, age 19, has just won the ITF 15 title in Turkey, and deserves her own thread.

A promising youngster, who played a lot against/with Emma Raducanu as a tiddler and young teenager, she's had a few injuries issues and, for whatever reason, didn't travel abroad to try and garner points during lockdown, preferring to play mainly UK Pro League tennis in the UK. Which she did very successfully.

Now, spreading her wings, she made it to Turkey and was runner-up in week 1, before going a step further to take the title in week 2.

A gifted ball striker, who's been a little fave for a long time, Sonay is not the tallest player, which doesn't help (especially for serving), and hates going forward to the net. But she's dynamic, with a very interesting forehand, with a lot of whip and racket-head speed, difficult to read where it's going.

She said herself recently in the Brighton & Hove Independent that she's trying to play more aggressively - in fact, the UK Pro event forced her to, as she wasn't doing as well as she wanted, especially in tie-breaks, at the start. And it's paying dividends.

Does she have 16 points, pre covid about 12 would've been top 1000.

At the moment it says she has 9.

That's the runners-up place, and two one-pointers.

And another 10 points to come for her tournament win - 19 points will be inside the top 1000  biggrin

So the 10 goes on next week plus 1 for qualifying giving her 20 points next week but the 1 pointers should be off soon?

She was a SE for last week, so no qualifying point. Not certain about the one-pointers as OER say next autumn, but as discussed elsewhere it is unclear when they will actually drop off.

live-eu currently showing 19 points and WR991

Yes, next week though 'just' the 10 since she had a SE this past week so didn't go through qualifying. So 19 points on 01/11.

The WTA are currently halving 2019 ITF tournament points on their 2021 anniversaries which with one pointers means taking off half of 1 rounded down = 0

Her September 2019 has already been err dealt with and currently nothing would actually come off either in respect of her November 2019 point.

I do think they should scrub the remaining ITF tournament 2019 half points by year end just as it is planned to scrub remaining WTA tournament 2019 points ( eg  Indian Wells and Habat ) on 08/11. Letting them run into 2022 would seem a bit ridiculous

When she next joins an entry list her points will be on and she might not have to qualify

Shout out to Sonay who breaks into the top 1000, now ranked WTA 985, up 247 places.

With only 6 tournaments on her list.

This week without dropping a set, nobody winning more than 7 games off her.

A couple of recent interviews:

Similar stuff in both although the podcast interview is longer and more detailed. Didn't fancy college tennis, lots of praise for the Pro League. Progress held back (in comparison to her peers) by injuries and family illness.
