WTA Finals 2021, Guadalajara, Mexico (plus road to). Wednesday 10th November

Finally some confirmation from the WTA, and it is indeed between Ons Jabeur and Anett Kontaveit for the one final remaining spot.

Permutations:

https://www.wtatennis.com/news/2305873/kontaveit-comeback-in-moscow-final-denies-alexandrova-keeps-wta-finals-hopes-alive

Kontaveit remains in contention to qualify for the last open spot at next month's Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara. She is locked in battle with Ons Jabeur to secure it; both players are in action next week, Kontaveit in the Transylvania Open, Cluj-Napoca and Jabeur in the Courmayeur Ladies Open. Kontaveit would need to win the title and for Jabeur to lose before the semifinals to qualify.

Pretty straightforward now, Anett needs to keep winning, but it's still in Ons' own hands, and you'd far rather be her, but still to play for.

1. Sabalenka

2. Krejcikova

3. Pliskova

4. Sakkari

5. Swiatek

6. Muguruza

7. Badosa

8. Jabeur / Kontaveit (Jabeur can actually finish above Badosa into 7th, but they'd both be bottom seeds regardless, and couldn't face each other in the group stages).

Session times are 8pm UK (2pm local) and 1.30am UK (7.30pm local).

And its a Wednesday to Wednesday event isnt it? Sadly, as ever, no British players. I see Emma could reach 12th in rankings , not race, if she won Cluj this week.

It's now in Kontaveit's hands after all as Jabeur has just withdrawn from her 250 event. If Kontaveit takes back to back titles, she will be the 8th entrant.

Oh, do you have a link to the announcement , Ace, I couldnt find any of the usual press mentioning it. Apparently Barty is not officially withdrawn by WTA, presumably for their own PR reasons, so they cant actually announce Badosa as in, although she has actually tweeted it herself ! Bloody WTA

So the field is set, bar any late withdrawals:

1. Sabalenka
2. Krejcikova
----------------
3. Pliskova
4. Sakkari
----------------
5. Swiatek
6. Muguruza
----------------
7. Badosa
8. Kontaveit

Then 2 of Jabeur, Osaka, Pavlyuchenkova, Svitolina, Mertens going as alt, in that order, should they wish to.

I was more just relieved watching the last week or so unfold as a neutral, but I was kind of hoping Ons would have taken the final spot, but Kontaveit has been on an amazing run these past couple of months, she's won 19 of her last 20 matches, or 26 of 28 if you take it back a little further, and 4 WTA titles since just before the US Open. Poor Ons though, she had so much margin about 16 days ago, but everything that could have gone wrong since then, pretty much did.

Kontaveit coming through to the finals is like when our Jo almost made it. Hoping Ons makes it next year!

Yeah, twice in a row Jo missed out, but the Garcia 2017 version would have hurt the most. Still can't believe she pulled off back to back P5 / PM titles.

Ons has always been an interesting player with her style, background, and personality, but she's grown on me since this years grass season. I feel she has been more of a factor in the bigger events this season than Kontaveit, so a bit of a shame she misses out, but then I guess that was a set scoring system in place and she didn't quite do enough, despite Barty's withdrawal (and 4 titles for Anett is good going).

She'll have a better platform to push on next season though as she'll start the year with a ca. 10 ranking, whereas this year she started around 30, which meant she bumped into eventual champ and high seed Osaka in R3 of the Aussie Open.

Ons has actually been really good fun this week, and taking it very well. A few posts like the below throughout the week:

twitter.com/Ons_Jabeur/status/1454854593402265600

It really is a great opportunity for the players, especially as 6 will be making their debuts. You get 375 simply for turning up three times, even if you lost 0-6 0-6 x 3, and an extra 125 points for a win, so they can sharp add up, and count as an extra 17th tournament on your ranking. The prize money isn't as much as when in Shenzhen, but still a significant pot. I think I read it was around $5m this year, as opposed to the $14m in 2019, but still good for an event only confirmed about 6 weeks ago.

Yeah Ons has been great on social media I must admit. I feel not many other players would take it in such good humour - it is very endearing.

When she beat Venus at Wimbledon this year her on court interview was so sweet that she got a fan in me and I suspect many others there that day.
