I went for Emma. A couple of other very worthy winners though.
To put into perspective what she did - Heather Watson, 29 years old, British women's tennis stalwart, an impressive 4 WTA titles, cracked the top 40, participated in 3 Olympic games - very respectable career. She has also had 39 grand slam singles main draw appearances, but has never once made the second week. Emma, 18 year old WC, makes it in her first ever main draw appearance, after barely playing for 16 months. Not a Murderer's Row run, but did beat two solid top 50 players (Vondrousova and Cirstea) who had both beaten fancied seeds in their respective preceding matches before they played Emma, and Vondrousova obviously made the Olympic final in her very next tournament after Wimbledon. Magda Linette is another 29 year old who has also never made R4 of a slam, and there will be many other solid WTA players who haven't, and won't, ever make it to the last 16 of a slam draw.
Could have voted for a number of these - and they would all would be worthy winners. But I feel that good results don't necessarily make them player of the month, and something extra is needed.
So Emma gets my vote, for the same reasons as Ace has alreay set out. Cam, Liam and Fran were close behind.
Yes, for me it's who made the biggest impression on me in the month which can be any mixture of things or sometimes just a one-off. Although I'm very in to my stats, and while certainly relevant, it will rarely come down to just looking at wins and titles. It's July for me was about ...
15 votes now placed, thank you. Reminder the vote closes at 9 pm this evening at which we will see if we have a winner or a play off. A bit like the Olympic golf, this is.
