Week 29 - WTA250 Palermo, Italy Clay

Q1: MURRAY SHARAN, Samantha (GBR) 6 243 (CH=165 2013) v DELAI, Melania (ITA) 596 (CH=594 2021) {18yo JCH=22}

That junior ranking suggests this may be a tougher match than it first appears.

 Cheers!

Just asking, are you actually in Sardinia?

(You can completely ignore that question, by the way, it's none of my business.....)

Sam's form has really fallen off a cliff, 0-7 in 2021, 0-8 overall, or 1-13 stretching back to last March. She was the underdog against her Italian opponent yesterday (mainly due to her form), but Delai herself was a 10/1 underdog in her FQR against Q Zheng (1/20) (who admittedly is promising), and subsequently lost 2 and 1 in 57 minutes, so it's probably just as well Sam lost yesterday.

One thing I did find interesting the other week, and was quite surprised at the time, although it probably makes more sense now, was the difference is odds between Sam and Naiktha against that young Czech player in Prague quals last week:

Sam was a circa 1.50 favourite vs the 2.41 youngster, so reasonably close:
www.tennisexplorer.com/match-detail/

Whereas the same youngster was an average of 6.52 to beat Naiktha, in the match that actually did happen:
www.tennisexplorer.com/match-detail/

I was thinking there surely can't be that much difference between Sam and Naiktha in terms of respective odds against the same player, but there probably is on current form (and Naiktha hasn't exactly been stellar...)

Thanks, I was waiting for the WTA to publish it, but that was a good link.

All in seperate sections, so can't meet until the semis. biggrin

L!6:- Cristina Bucsa (ESP) / Yana Sizikova (RUS) CR427 (314+113) v Sarah Beth Grey (GBR) / Emily Webley-Smith (GBR) CR427 (233+194)

L16:- Maddison Inglis (AUS) / Samantha Murray SHARAN (GBR) CR389 (201+188) v Olga Danilovic (SRB) / Elena-Garbriela Ruse (ROU) CR 450 (294+156)

L16:  Eri Hozumi (JPN) / Shuai Zhang (CHN) [1] CR 169 (120+49) beat Emina Bektas (USA) / Tara Moore (GBR) CR 311 (154+157) by 6-3 7-5

Decent looking effort against the top seeds. 4/10 BPs converted vs 2/9.

Emina & Tara were broken in the second set for 5-6* but then had 2 BPs at 40-30*. Lost the next point though and the final deuce deciding point.

Sam and Madison have just taken the second set on a tiebreak to level the match.

Close, but not quite, as Sam and Maddison lose to their noisy opponents

L16:- Maddison Inglis (AUS) / Samantha Murray SHARAN (GBR) CR389 (201+188) lost to Olga Danilovic (SRB) / Elena-Garbriela Ruse (ROU) CR 450 (294+156) 2-6 7-6(4) 6-10

Beth and Emily having an absolute nightmare here. Two double faults from Beth in the opening game sort of set the tone really. Really surprised as I thought they had a real shot in this match especially if they played anywhere near the level they brought to Wimbledon, but both seem to be unable to get a clean hit on the ball and struggling with their movement. They'll be lucky to win a game at this rate. Sizikova obviously not earning her money this week by throwing a few games in this one...

0-6 0-3*
