Olympic Qualification

No surprises in the selection, but I really wasn't expecting Andy and Jo to go.

Just see this from George Bellshaw on twitter:

Great Britain's Tokyo Olympics tennis team announced...

Mens Singles: Dan Evans, Andy Murray

Womens Singles: Johanna Konta, Heather Watson

Mens Doubles: Dan Evans and Neal Skupski, Joe Salisbury and Andy Murray

Womens Doubles: Johanna Konta and Heather Watson

No Jamie. Have Joe and Andy ever played together, likewise Jo and Heather?

Interesting how Dan changed his tune from last year. I guess Can didn't want to go or wasn't picked?

Answering my own question about Cam as he has just posted in Instagram that due to the pandemic nesting up the tennis calendar he is going for moving up in the rankings and aiming for a good US swing. He does have time on his side (hopefully) to play the next one in Paris(?)

Andy and Joe is very interesting, good to see Dan in there for singles and doubles.

Cam had entered Los cabos earlier this week so expected him to not play, as per reasons in his instagram

Andy attempting to play both doubles and singles is what surprises me the most.

and mixed will get allocated on site as well, presumably Joe and Neal will be up for that with Heather most likely? Or both Heather and Jo? Not sure how mixed gets allocated in terms of entrants though?

Jo has previously invited Joe to be a partner (not sure how serious it was). In reality it may rest on whether she's fit enough for 3 events. Heather and Jo have partnered in Fed Cup and Rio. I think Jo partnered Jamie in Rio and Andy with Heather.

Quote from the Sun dated 12 Dec 2020:

" Konta, who is likely to qualify for the Olympics singles competition, is desperate to play mixed doubles with Joe Salisbury in Japan.

So much so she has sent the Putney lad an AUDITION TAPE!

Konta laughed: Ive sent him a tape of me volleying. I was like: If youll have me, Id be very grateful. Hopefully we can play together.

Joe responded, saying hes the one who should probably be auditioning. Not me. I thought that was very nice of him. Very chivalrous. "

I find this a really uncomfortable decision. Cam has made himself unavailable and I completely understand why, but the notion that Andy can carry the hopes of the nation is unrealistic given the matches under his belt . Dan will be our key player IMHO.
That said who else could make it competitive, Liam could give it a go ?
I can't say I'm bothered about tennis at the Olympics though I know that's not an opinion shared on here always !

jamie disappointed by not getting a place in the team

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/57634975

How was it done, do we know? Joe got into the top 10 list didnt he, so got to select a partner, presumably selected Andy?

How would the second get selected? Presumably Neal got the 2nd slot based on rankings and selected Dan as partner or the selectors put them together?

Hard to see how Jamie would have thought Neal would choose him over Dan, given Dan and Neal did well earlier this season and Neal and Jamie never clicked.

Re Joe - well, Joe and Jamie have never played seriously, have they? And personally I would take Andy over Jamie, but again maybe the selectors imposed that one?

No sympathy for Jamie at all. He has been amazing over the years but his time is over.

Yep, selection seems fair enough to me (I think Jamie's comments are fine though, disappointed, doesn't agree but accepts someone might have different opinion).

Joe was #10 at time of cut off. And I'm guessing he put in he would prefer Andy.

Funny that Andy tweeted he wasn't keeping anyone out of the team when he was keeping out his own brother (he must have been talking about singles).
