Weeks 22 & 23 - French Open (Roland-Garros) - Paris, France (clay) - main draw

Covid times and that in recent couple of years most of the "older" timers have sort of dropped off, leaving the young ones really the only ones left. Tsonga, Gasquet, Goffin, Monfils, Lopez, Verdasco, Kolscreiber, Dimi, Stan, Cilic, Nishikori..... Nowhere to be seen.

Well, GB looks like going one better than France.

Assuming Gasquet loses tonight (against Nadal, and I don't think it's sticking my neck out too far to go along with that), there will be no French players, men or women, in R3 (single)

As one of the leading French tennis tweet guys is saying:

"Nous sommes les témoins d'une édition dramatiquement historique."

Good thing our German/New Zealander is still in for us

Still in r2 whereas all of these players are/were solid quarter final showing, and even the "older ones" aren't much older than Rafa/Novak

L32:  (3) Rafael Nadal (ESP) WR 3 (CH = 1 in August 2008) vs  Cameron Norrie WR 45

The ultimate test for Cam!

So indeed there will be no French players in either singles L32.

An absolute shocker, out of comparison with GB's bad Slams, given the relative French depth over many years and how much more a part of general French life tennis seems to be compared to the UK.

I guess CD can best put it into context.

Journalists are having a field day, as you can imagine. It's all 'catastrophe' and 'worst performance in history' and 'dramatic gap' of players and more and more of the same.

I like this one:

"Le creux générationnel annoncé depuis des années, notamment chez les garçons, semble se concrétiser et annoncer plusieurs années de vache maigre"

The thrust is simply that the gap of players coming through, that we've known was coming for years (especially in men), now seems to have become reality

BUT the bit I like is that we're now going to have some years of 'skinny cows'

(which we would translate as 'lean years')

But there's certainly going to be a lot of pressure on the bods in Paris. (Especially as Italy are doing so well).

They've been used to having a rich stable of players, and managed to paper over it in the past few years, as a few older players, or young guns on a flukey run, diverted attention. But now it's staring them in the face....

Will be interesting....

15 seeds left in last 32. Ive not looked back but that must be close to a record seed cull?

When they invest so much stock in Mr Mouratoglou, what do they expect?

to add to the french woe, italy have 5 players left in the last 32, spain and germany both have 4 left and with switzerland on 2 players left. so half the remaining draw pretty much is from neighbours to france. usa has 4 left also.
