Wimbledon WCs - Men

We've got this thread for the women but not the men.

And, if I've understood another post correctly, Lloyd Glasspool and Harri have a wildcard into the doubles?

If not, well, here's a thread to discuss our men's chances whatever smile

Is their a WC playoff tournament for a qualifying WC this year?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the winners of the national junior championships would get a WC into qualifying?

Not sure, there is probably some link hidden deep on the LTA website

We know the National Juniors championships U18 winners get qualifying wild cards though.

For the main draw, my feeling on wild cards is:

Liam - no doubts
Jay - not sure he has done much to deserve one but pretty sure he will get one...
Jack Draper - coming back now and I think he will also get one.
Andy Murray - will need one and will get one

Below those, I am not sure I would give a main draw one to Paul Jubb, Ryan Peniston, Anton M, Aidan Mc, or someone lack Jack PJ unless we see something off them in the next few weeks that stands out.

I would also give the usual wild cards to those who win the two Trophy events at Nottingham, so that will make 6 in total.

2 then to play with any Brits who do something special from the few listed above or someone overseas who deserves one - I havent analysed it in detail yet so would need to look at that - or just leave them begging as has happened in the past

I'd probably give one to Anton this year on the basis that he did make Junior QF at Wimbledon twice and would have probably got one last year based on that.

I think a few of these need to stand out in the next 3 or 4 weeks on clay or grass with a special week or big win, I think there are maybe 4 or 5 outsiders like Anton (Paul, Ryan, Aidan, maybe just them, perhaps too soon for Jack PJ)

I agree on the others but I think Anton would have got one last year based on his previous Junior outings so if that was the case then I'd like to see them carry that forward to this year, it's not his fault that it wasn't on.  Obviously if he wasn't playing at all like Emma it would be different but he has competed at the Brit events strongly and he is back out on the tour now.

emmsie, you think Anton would get a MAIN draw wildcard based on making the juniors QF? Or a quali wildcard?

I don't think I'd see a main draw one based on that.

But definitely qualis.

However, he's playing well now and, you know me, I'd give a whole heap out.

So, pre-grass, just based on now, and just re our youngsters, there's a good argument for main draw WCs to Jack and Anton.

Qualis to Arthur, Felix (and Jack PJ).

Quali play-off places for Harry W, Oscar W ...

Liam and Jay are obviously MD. And I'd give one to Ryan too (I like the idea of giving at least one slightly 'soft' one to a player, just to see how it plays out). Plus Andy, naturally.

James Ward, Choinski etc are a bit unknown factors.

So

MD: Liam; Ryan; Jack; Anton; Andy; Jay - three places left (for tournie winners, if needed, and any special requests)

Qualis: 2 quali play off winners; Arthur; Felix; Jack PJ; James Ward (if playing - bet he is and bet they give him one); Choinski ? (if playing - not sure, and not sure I'd give one even if he is); and one other

The main one I'm missing is Paul Jubb. He would definitely have the 8th quali one (assuming he doesn't get a MD one, which is possible but maybe a bit of a stretch this year, not sure). Aidan would be the next in line. (But maybe a MD one anyway, for Paul?)

As said, this is all pre grass tournaments....

And I'd use up ALL the doubles wildcards for GB players (both qualis ones - including Tad & Finn - and MD), I've give them out like candy. Although I quite like the idea of a quali competition for that too - so all the blokes that are 500-1500 could come along and have a go.

Anton 100% in the mix for MDWC, QF 2018 and 2019, top of the leaderboard with 2 wins and a RU in the UKPro league, and still not 100% committed to the tour, has always put studies on a equal footing. Still a way to go but for me, right now it's his unless the wheels fall off over the next few weeks.

ETA my argument on the MDWC is that he made QF 2 years on the trot while doing academic A Levels, if it was just the once and he was committed and playing regularly on tour and that's as good as it got I'd be more hesitant but the pedigree on grass is there, he's a big, strong lad with a serve and I don't really see anyone else that has a better case in his age/ranking band other than Ryan

There's just the 8 MDWCs CD, not 9 (9 QWCs). I'm not sure if there are any Konjuh or Pironkova type equivalent contenders on the men's side, nor have I studied the pattern in recent years of previous boys winners, but I see the Japanese lad who won the title in 2019 is currently ranked 505, so surely a QWC, at best, for him.

Sorry, I knew there were 8 MD WCs, just couldn't add up ::((

So, yes, I've got two left over on my list.

Didn't realise there were 9 QWCs (I'm not doing very well, really....)

But that's good news ! The more the merrier

At this stage, rightly or wrongly, I honestly can't see more than 4 Brits being in the mix for MD WCs - Andy, Liam, Jay and Jack.

May others put in really convincing performances to further their cases in the limited time that remains.

Yes, on a practical level, I think you're right (and as you say, subject to performances - hopefully good ones! - in the next few weeks)

But I dream.....smile

Er what has Jay done in the last 6 months that warrants a WC but Anton and Ryan don't

Fair point.

But he is a lot higher ranked than either Ryan P or Anton.

And still young - as are the others, of course, Anton especially, but....

And had a good story from Wimbledon previously, so a bit of public recognition
