Entries Week 23 - 07/06/21

Week 2 of the French Open, but this week also includes Nottingham WTA and Mens Challenger

The LTA site carries a summary of the WTA entries

https://www.lta.org.uk/major-tennis-events/british-major-events/nottingham-open/news-and-media/2021/venus-williams-and-johanna-konta-lead-stellar-entry-list-for-nottingham-open/

Venus and Jo Konta are the headlines; presumably all these entries are based on not being in French week 2.

Here's the full list:

Not read Jon's link yet, and that will likely explain more, but looks like a 48 player draw, so possibly the 35 direct entrants, 4 or 5 MDWCs (inc Top 20 WCs), and 8 Qs?

Obviously that list will change a fair bit in due course, depending on how players get on in RG, but a nice enough list at the moment, also gives players an option if it doesn't go well in Paris, and the extra places should ensure at least one more British MDWC, although presumably less points for a R1 win than in a normal W250. Much needed after the Dutch 250 got cancelled.

Edit - article says 48 player draw, and up to 5 WCs.

3 wildcards into Nottingham Challenger - one would expect Jay and Jack D to be top of the list and maybe one held back for someone from RG who loses round one? If a third Brit got one Id like to see one of Paul Jubb, Ryan P, Anton or Jack PJ given a chance .

The Nottingham and Stuttgart lists are pretty pointless. What with it being week 2 of RG. I'd imagine anyone going deep into week 1 would also question playing. Be surprised if more than 50% on each list as they are currently are survive.

On top of that there are quite a few challangers this week, Lyon, Bratislava, Almaty & Orlando. Almaty will also have a tournament the week after. The entry lists for these are going to be far lower. Players like Ryan Peniston should be aiming for these rather than just entering Nottingham which will have a stacked field and hoping for a WC. The temptation to play on home soil does sometimes seem a blinded one.
