I wanted to say, I have a habit of upsetting folks on this forum. My opinions are often Ill informed I agree and a lot of people have strong likings for players that I often have poorly judged perspectives on. Like much of life, it is likely I wrong
I enjoy my polls and it entertains me so I think from this point I will limit my musings to those and the mens game , which I know a little more about and not get caught up in the womens game where I know very little of worth and where others hold players, quite rightly , fondly in their hearts. Its good to be a fan, I respect that and will avoid running the risk of upsetting anyone by sticking to what i know.
Its all about opinions. If yours upset other people thats their lookout. I enjoy all your posts so carry on
Thanks Seagull , I do also! But i know very little about the womens game, sadly, so Ill stick to what I know. And also comment on wheelchair tennis which I do also know nothing about but run little risk of upsetting people as neither does anyone else !
This forum needs opinions. And we certainly don't need these opinions to be fully researched or thought out. Right or wrong, a bit controversial or not, they can lead to interesting discussions as long as folk don't get personal or unnecessarily take things personally or say personally about a player they like. And as long as a post is honestly felt at the time and not trolling. It's a forum, just reply, correct or whatever.
Most of us wish at times we hadn't posted something and/or get facts wrong. And when it hapoens there is usually someone else to correct us and offer an alternative narrative. From that we have as a whole learned more and the forum is better off.
What parties involved should not do is get personal about other posters and you certainly do not. It is quite simple to avoid this by replying to facts and opinions on players and tennis with alternative facts and opinions.
I think when people get offended it's often to do with them recognising an element of truth in what is being said and you used very unoffensive language, unlike some others do! So carry on carrying on!

Lordy, Jon, you upset people a fraction 'of what some other people do' - no names
And this is not a board where you need a Certificate in Tennis Expertise to post an opinion ! And Amen to that, as flamingowings says.
(NB I agree with you about Jo - see other thread)
Do remember that - like in regular life - people who feel strongly against things are far more likely to post than people who agree. This is fair enough and all good - there's not much point just posting 'yeah, I agree' but if you don't agree, you've got more of an agenda/feel more strongly and want to explain why. As said, all good.
BUT it doesn't mean that the view of the person who is upset is more important than the views of the others.
So post ! Without opinions this board dies. You're never rude or offensive, or even anywhere faintly near that. Which is the only caveat. So - allez, JonBoy !
Wow, I've missed a fair bit while I've been out this morning !
JonH - I echo what everyone has said above - you're never offensive or controversial. We all have opinions, rightly or wrongly, and there's nothing wrong with stating them. So carry just as you were.
And for the record, I agree with what you were posting, but I'm staying out of it !
I read this thread before catching up on the Maimi thread and was really shocked to see Jon apologising for causing offence. There are a few on this forum who constantly annoy me with their deliberately outrageous comments, but I can never remember Jon posting anything contentious. On the contrary he contributes a huge amount and I'm sure we are all very appreciative of his efforts. Having now read the relevant comment I agree there was nothing to take offence about. Jo's form has been poor as the stats confirm. We all hope this will improve and certainly the reappointment of her former coach gives us cause for optimism. Meanwhile I hope Jon continues to post as before without having to worry about how his comments are received.
Hey all . I appreciate the support but wasnt really looking for it although I think my posting this thread probably was a little self serving.
My main issue is fanaticism, which I dont get and have never got. The players I support , like Dan, Nick, Agassi , McEnroe etc tend to be people i like watching but are all probably significantly flawed people whom Im sure Id have little in common with or like for in real life.
I find it hard to fathom how for some players people get so, so defensive and, well, obsessive. Not Rosamund specifically, I like Rosamund a lot and have had PM chats with them offline. But generally, and it causes me to back off as no amount of debate is likely to end in a happy outcome.
I avoid forums like Tennis Forum or Mens Tennis Forum as I find it is full of attack dogs, hyperbole, extreme views where things are black and white and woe betide you if you disagree with the favourites of that person.
It seems to be a thing that is linked to some of the top players, womens side it was impossible to criticise the Williams sisters without being accused of racism for example, and it seems you cant have a view on one of Federer, nadal or Djokovic without being attacked by fans of one of the others - and if you support Murray you may as well accept he is a terrible player and human being who is not worthy of the big 3.
The language which means you cant criticise without being a hater makes me despair and sad as its a language I dont understand and dont want to be part of.
Thankfully this forum isnt that. Generally. Or usually.
Onwards.

Probably wise but I had to get my two pennies worth in as I usually scroll past that poster due to their incessant negativity.

Jon you shouldnt have to censor yourself beyond the obviously offensive which I cant ever recall you getting close to and the wild suggestion that Leeds arent (Historically) dirty .. dont take it so seriously there are some weird folk out there (apologises). Obviously feel free to do what you want but not to post would lessen the forum an increment.
Just enjoy having opinions, chewing the fat and debating them with others.
I have gone from a position of knowing nothing about tennis a decade ago to knowing about the exploits of Billy in his van, the use of Beetroot juice to optimise performance at A1 pharmaceuticals (come back Gary!!) being humiliated on court to a fairly arthritic BiS with a gently swinging cunningly disguised kick serve proudly sporting his back the Brits T shirt to sitting behind Tracey Austin at Ojai being very modest about her son while chatting to Rod Laver.
Honestly feel it is more important to thank those that post given it is such a diverse bunch of people with one thing in common an interest in a relatively to very niche area of British sport who and make it such an interesting, informative and generally friendly place to post. I do miss Madeline and her popping out to make Tea and missing out important bits of matches ... also havent heard from a certain expert in Norwegian tennis for sometime.
