I suppose that Smith wants to get some wins under his belt and build up some confidence ahead of GB F7 next week. Also, this week's British tour is being held on the same clay courts in Bournemouth as GB F7 so Smith will be hoping to gain an advantage by having already won several matches on the courts.
David Rice has the highest LTA ranking of any of our U16 players. Both Cox and Evans are 3.1
Brewer, who was the tournament’s fourth seed, dropped just one set on his way to the final recording wins over Sean Thornley from Kent 6-2, 6-3, Hertfordshire’s Ed Corrie 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and Surrey’s Andrew Kennaugh 6-0, 6-1. The final saw Brewer take on fifth seed Richard Wire from Essex who had played extremely well to reach the final, overcoming top seed and current British number 11 Matthew Smith 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. An impressive display of clay court tennis saw the young Scot triumph 7-6(1), 6-3 to win the event.
David Brewer commented: “The result was a bit of a surprise actually. I’ve had a great week. I’ve taken time out recently to work on my clay court game and this win shows that the hard work has paid off. I’ve got a six week block of clay court tournaments to look forward to, here in Bournemouth, in Edinburgh and then on to Romania so hopefully this result bodes well for the rest of the season.”
Some very surprising results here last week, I have a feeling that Chris Eaton may have been injured/unwell because he had been offered a wildcard for the Bournemouth futures but withdrew on Monday.
I wouldn't have been surprised if Andy Kennaugh had been under the weather aswell for his semi against David Brewer. Brewer's a good clay-court player but I can't see him handing out a bagel and a breadstick to a fully fit Kennaugh.
Matt Smith's woes continue, but still a fantastic week for Richard Wire [2005 national U18 champ], that's a career best win for him.
