ITF Wheelchair Tour

As we have a specials junior section, I felt we should have at least a thread to comment on good British performances in the wheelchair tour.
prior to the AO, we have the Victorian Open and Melbourne Open. Victorian starts on Wednesday. Not sure of field but it will include Brits like Alfie H , Gordon R and Jordanne W.

I think this is a really good idea.

It's been mentioned before that we don't really have a general thread for wheelchair tennis.

Or indeed for senior tennis, which is a large area of tennis, and where the British do rather well.

Deaf tennis is another special section.

It needs someone to champion it a bit, otherwise it doesn't happen.

It's not an area I follow but I like the fact we have a section for it (and if anyone wanted to do any other specialist sections in the general thread, I'd definitely read them).

Well done, Jon !

And, yes, I draw the line at Beach tennis too

Effectively beach volley ball with raquets.

Although I did sit through one wonderful FFT meeting about Beach tennis.

You've got to remember that the French tend to have rather short, clipped vowels.

So for two hours I sat listening about ways to encourage and promote 'Bitch tennis' biggrinbiggrin - or 'B-itch tennis', if auto-mods don't like the word

I found it VERY hard to take the meeting seriously (especially as I don't give a monkey's about proper beach tennis anyway)

I waited right to the end to explain the linguistic problem - which actually caused a lot of laughs, from men and women - (and inappropriate comments) - we were all bored - and a good ten minutes of 'English' practice as half tried to master saying 'beach' properly and the other half just contented themselves with practising 'b-itch' because it might come in useful!

The draws are out for the Victorian Open - this is Slam strength field (all players will be in the AO) and the Brits include:

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid - mens wheelchair singles and doubles
Lucy Shuker - womens wheelchair singles and doubles
Andy Lapthorne - quad wheelchair singles and doubles.

Jordane Whiley doesnt seem to be playing womens, not sure if she is entered in the AO or not?

Action starts tomorrow at the Melbourne Park venue a la ATP and WTA warm ups

In the mens qf round, both Alfie and Gordon won and move into the last 4 in singles. Alfie beat the 2nd seed, Fernandez, in an excellent win.

Andy lapthorne won his qf match in quads and easily. Lucy shuker lost her opener.

In terms of the tour structure, as well as the traditional 4 slams , there are also 4 scheduled Super Series events this season that carry money of around $45k per event - these are the Japan Open, French Riviera Open, British Open, and USTA Championships. These all take place shortly after each of the 4 grand slams. There is also the NEC Wheelchair Masters as a big year end event, often held in Netherlands or Japan, although cant see that on the schedule currently planned.

Below Super Series and Slam, there are events at Itf levels 1 , 2 and 3 and Futures. The important action is at slam and super series and it would be great to record wins by Brits at those 8 events in Indys weekly winners listings, if we get them.

This Victorian open is itf series 3 and, although good money, just a warm up with little tour points, same for Melbourne later in week. So I wont count these towards player of season tournie wins count, just the slams and super series events as per above.

Jordanne looks to be in the UK, posted a video of training/practicing at an LTA venue (maybe the main LTA venue? Not sure)
