January 2020 were when both of those meetings took place, both on hard. Podoroska was ranked 258 during both matches, Fran was 350 and 352, so they have both made really good progress in those 12 months.
It's still very early days in Nadia's 'WTA' career following her surprise RG run to leave the ITF scene behind, and she's possibly still finding her feet. It'll likely be a tough match, as it would be against a lot of the field, but I don't think that opponent ranking is as daunting as it looks on paper, at this stage.
Note that Fran's match is MD R1 (54 player draw). I don't think there is any qualifying for these WTA 500s, the eligible players just going into MDs. I had just thought how on earth could Podoroska be in qualifying, let alone q14 seed.

Good spot. And correct, although 54 draws is quite unusual !
It looks like Fran's match is scheduled on court 8 overnight to start at 12.45. She will be playing at exactly the same time as Katie.
according to the pdf on tnns from wta, Fran follows Katie and both are on court 8. Unless theyve changed the schedule?
Sorry Jon you are correct. I couldn't quite work out the court, timing and the 2 tournaments. One match follows the other. It's complicated with 2 separate womens tournaments going on at the same venue. Jo was shown for a long time playing on Sunday night/Monday morning TBD and now that is not the case.
Fran has lost the first set 1-6. I dont think she is playing badly but Podoroska just seems to have the little bit extra. She also goes a break down in the second set so not looking promising but hopefully a big learning curve for her.
33 minutes for the first set. No doubt who was in charge, but the scoreline seemed a bit unrepresentative.
1-6 to the Argentine. No break-point chances yet for Jones.
