Should the Aussie open be taking place ?

I have mixed feelings and I wondered what the prevailing view on the board was?

Seems wrong when Aussies aren't freely allowed back into own country, with arrivals rationed.

Sadly I think it should be cancelled. Just not practical or sensible. Holding US or French seemed easier.

Can't help but be interested in it but pushed to vote here, then "No - it's just wrong" for Australia when it has done so much otherwise to protect itself.

Its a great question John, I genuinely am not sure which option to click. From a selfish point of view I want to watch it. It is a sport that can put decent rules in place so that it should be fairly safe compared to other things. The advice in this country is work form home where possible.....this is the players job, they HAVE to have events to work.

But then look at the terrible images from hospitals and the horrific suffering many are going through and their priorities dont seem such a priority.

Does seem strange that Australia have allowed it to go ahead when theyve kept the borders closed for so long. I know cricket teams have visited but thats a team that sticks together a bit easier to control than several hundred individuals and their teams. Surprised it has happened.

The only issue with the tournament is the location as Australia have managed to be practically Covid free. Other tournaments have taken place reasonably safely for the last few months. I personally would have preferred that it be moved to a different country this year as it's already proving a nightmare for the players with the flights. As for the argument that citizens can't get in, whilst that is true I am almost certain that cancelling the tournament in Australia wouldn't lead to people getting home any quicker.

You're right - it wouldn't lead to people getting home quicker (these are chartered flights). However,  it's all of the social media posts and articles about it which makes it privileged.

The view of an Aussie I know stuck in the US is that if they can provide supervised quarantine accommodation and charter flights for tennis players and attendants, surely those flights should have been used for Australians first.    I think it will generate huge ill-will amongst Australians.

Everyone wants to go home. Australia and New Zealand have been ruthless and have earned international  envy for what they have managed covid wise by isolating themselves but the ill- feeling that exists from Australians not allowed into their own country on seeing these tennis people allowed in will fester.....and I do not blame them

And on top of that have yet another set of rules for the most marketable players so layers upon layers of entitlement but thats on Tennis Australia not Tennis per se.  Anyway it's going to be entertaining over the nxet few weeks. Who is going to do a Querry and make break for freedom. It also appears as though anything before the players got to Australia wasn't really thought through properly. I think I would've had them do a weeks quarantine before travelling and a week after.

Oh believe me I know - I am trying to get into NZ myself and yes, social media comments are awful (I am allowed INTO NZ and everything sorted as per rules).
