Week 46 ATP Tour Finals - London (Indoor Hard) (Doubles)

Odds on an Austrian double today in the o2?

Personally, I think Thiem will win singles but fancy Koolhof and Mektic in doubles.

7-1 up but it has to be said they didn't do a lot wrong. Just too good from the others.

Do you think? I reckon Joe will be kicking himself - that really tentative smash cost them the match.

As Julia says, a real heart-breaker.

What smash?

They got a little tentative but they weren't missing, they put the ball in court and made the others hit it past them.

Exactly. It was way too tentative. It was his point. It should have been a winner. It wasn't a hard smash.

I don't remember the smash. I rewatched the end and only saw one which he played from near the baseline.

I haven't watched it back. He was just behind the service box line, from my remembrance. And hit it down the middle, too soft, no depth, no angle. For a top doubles player, it was poor. Just my opinion. I understand he didn't want to make a mistake but that's exactly the point - given who he was playing against, given this was the top 4 in the world, it was the wrong call and he deserved to lose the point. But again, just my opinion.

I've re watched it again and I'm willing to say the truth may lie somewhere in between our two points of view but go no further than that. smile

 I'll settle for that - it's a deal - we have a compromise smile

Daniil Medvedev d. Dominic Thiem 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4

Fun fact: A Russian won the first ever ATP Finals in London. A Russian won the last ATP Finals in London.

the Russians are going to rule the world!

Great match in fact, excellent and deserving winner of this event.

Well done to Koolhof and Mektic also - their last match as a pair, driven by Mektic chasing Olympic Gold with Pavic.

One of the better ATP Finals tournaments

And no crowd and the last one in London for now

Nadal has still never won an ATP Finals title.

Indeed, probably good to move it along whilst it will be missed. O2 and Madison Square Garden have been the 2 homes over the years that go down in history. Suspect Turin will move on quite quickly, perhaps we will see Moscow and Vienna get a chance at some stage.

I see Medvedev has added a whole 1500 points to his ranking points total, having gone unbesten here this year after zero points last year.

But who is your World Player of the year? I believe that there is a thread about this

Yes a good match and overall I think Medvedev deserved to win although I was rooting for Thiem.

As an aside (and probably a bit odd of me to notice!), it really struck me that now the players have to get their own towels that the use of one after every point seems to have changed and that it feels that they are getting on with play quicker.

Not sure whether it was Thiem and Medvedev in particular, as I didnt notice earlier in the week, but a very welcome development and a policy which should be maintained in a future post-COVID world!!
