Heather and Harriet as indy says are good doubles players.

Hopefully we don't need to go to that rubber and I think there's a contest between Harriet and Katie for the second singles spot. But I can see an argument for putting Harriet out on Day 1 and if it ends 1-1 putting Katie in for revers singles, and resting Harriet to play doubles with Heather if needed.

We really should win this tie comfortably indoors.

I agree. Heather and Harriet should win all their singles with ease.  Can't imagine there will be any need for the doubles to take place. There can be no excuses for not winning this.

I don't think that this tieis anything like the foregone conclusion which most posters here expect. Zarazua at 141 is an improving singles player and higher ranked than all the Brits except the out of form Watson. Olmos at 49 in doubles is 63 ahead of Watson. Second Mexican doubles player is higher ranked than all the other Brits.

Difficult to really judge Heathet & Harriet's doubles, just like many essentially singles players who more play occasional doubles. Other than at times they have been very competent.

I can't find an official source, but someone on TF is saying that Zarazua isn't event in their squad, and I've been keeping tabs on her progress for about 14 months, ha.

Apparently it is this:

Marcela ZACARIAS
Giuliana OLMOS
Fernanda CONTRERAS GOMEZ
Julia GARCIA

Awaiting official confirmation, but shouldn't be any excuse if that's the case.

The top four names were in the list of their top players that I posted on page 2 of this thread - their rankings have hardly changed since.

Julia Garcia is a 17 year old, WTA unranked, ITF 1728, JR 20. A bit of an unknown quantity, although I expect CD will know something about her.

Jeezo that Japanese squad is very weak given the players they have!

I'd be massively disappointed if we even lost more than a set quite honestly. We've been lucky to draw such a weak tennis nation and there can be no excuses for not winning and winning easily.

Totally, but I assume there's some correlation between the strength of the squad and whether the tie is on clay?

It is, and the tie was moved to Ukraine. The Japanese girls are all staying in Charleston it seems and then coming over to Europe for Stuttgart/Istanbul, instead of coming next week to play this and missing the first week of the red clay. Seems strange when they are all preparing on clay anyway to be honest.

But quite a few teams look to be a long way from full strength.

Ive not been following this too closely but noticed the draw sheet for the wta250 qualies in the 2nd Charleston event list Zarazua as top seed but then she is actually replaced by an alt. Presumably shes been moved into main draw , she couldnt be a late call up to this Fed Cup tie though ?

Katie B has posted on Instagram looking forward to the tie so presumably her withdrawal from Sharm is nothing to worry about.

Still not listed on the EPG, surely there will be red button coverage at least as there was against Slovakia last year?

It certainly looks as if Katie will have to show up very much better in practice than she did in Sharm to usurp Heather or Harriet from the singles spots.

Looks like the first GB rubber on Friday will be 2pm UK, 2nd rubber seemingly NB 4pm, or following on, if applicable. Midday start on the Saturday.

The ties seem pretty well spread out for those wanting to catch bits of the other, especially when you consider 7 of them are hosted in Europe.
