Petition to "Allow outdoor tennis during lockdown 2"

A friend phoned me this morning to inform me that Britain's number 2 grass court player Marcus Willis had tweeted his support for the above petition on Change.org.

In the mild weather we have had the last few days it is possible to play outdoors, my local courts are being used, they just take a broom along to clear the leaves and puddles.  As the government continues it's pernicious attack on our most basic of human rights I think this is worth signing.  New balls please.

Pretty confident that Tennis and Golf will be removed from the list, lots of lobbying going on meanwhile email your MP

How does lobbying parliament make it safe?

Edit: given a choice between health and "human rights", I vote for health every time.

Do you think an outdoor tennis match is unsafe then.  Show me the science that confirms tennis and golf outdoors is more unsafe than going jogging with a mate and I'll accept it but somehow I doubt that science exists.

I don't think, in general, it's health versus human rights.

It's short-term health versus longer term health and well-being.

And that's a debate government are always having, about many things.

So it's perfectly fine to have that argument now too and not just play the 'covid' card as a complete, no-questions-asked end-of-story card.

There's a debate to be had and there are plenty seeming inconsistencies and contradictions ( think pro football with people, at least previously, able to eat a meal  indoors at a club and watch the match on TV with a big almost empty outdoor stadium metres away, and even any windows onto that covered ). Anomalies are inevitable to some extent but I think, better thought out and considered, there could be less.

So an argument can be made for incompetence, but "pernicious attack on our most basic of human rights", oh please ...

They may be incompetent, but I think that the government is trying to do what they think is best to protect the nation's health and welfare (there is, obviously, a debate to be had as to whether what they are doing is right): I can't see how petitions help make things safer. Catching The Sniffle while playing tennis is not somehow healthier than catching it in an opium den (although, of course, there may be other side effects).

I think, at this stage, all human contact is potentially unsafe. I think excluding sports from any lockdown is unnecessary, as individual exercise can be as healthy as playing sport with others. Having watched (and debated about) professional sports players, I am not convinced that playing sport is definitely good for mental health, either.

... but, to be honest, I don't care what the government allows, as I will choose to act in a way that I feel is safe.

You do realise that they have expressly permitted people to go running with one other person from outside their house. There is no science to this at all, as for your claim about mental health, I don't think comparing a professional sportsmans mental health with someone like my friends widowed 80 year old father who was literally on the edge last time around is if any use

I'm actually a squash player, I have no issue with not being allowed to play, in fact I haven't since Feb because I can see the potential in an enclosed unventilated space for covid to spread, that's not the case on an outdoor tennis court or a golf course

I didn't. I deliberately avoided mentioning your "friend's widowed 80 year old father".

... but (if asked) I would have noted that my understanding is that the scientists would consider him to be in the group that should be sheltering rather than playing tennis, even if tennis were allowed.

Despite my love of tennis I think we should just put up with 4 weeks without it. The reason is that I think the problem since the original lockdown started to ease back in the summer is that a significant minority of people just do not think the rules apply to them. This includes 'tennis people' like us. You can easily find posts on twitter of photos of tennis groups, including adults, clearly not social distancing at all, from as soon as tennis was allowed again from June. I totally agree that there are lots of inconsistencies in the rules, I also think it highly unlikely that anyone would catch covid by playing tennis singles or having an individual lesson outdoors. BUT the simplicity of a more complete lockdown just makes it much easier to enforce, and in any case we know that not all tennis activity would necessarily stick to the rules just like any human activity. It is just four weeks and fairly unlikely in november to be four weeks of glorious weather for outdoor tennis anyway.....

Given he is still working at 80 and playing golf, I'm pretty confident that he is perfectly capable of deciding for himself what he can and cannot do, we do after all live in a so called free country.

Have you been living on the moon for the last 7 months INDIANA?  For 3 months you could only leave home to shop once a day, and we criticise North Korea! These measures are being brought back in, maybe you don't know what pernicious means or you take some sick pleasure in seeing millions of peoples lives destroyed all because of a mild flu like bug.  Or maybe you have a financially vested interest in the collapse of the country, either way I don't want to know.

Some of the other comments here just show how you have all been brainwashed.  You will all be moaning next year when your local sports clubs are permanently shut.  Lockdown achieved nothing positive and neither will the next one.  Enjoy living in ignorance.

I know you're cross, Mark, and honestly, I'm one of the few who is basically on your side.

But let's not make it too personal. Of course Indy takes no 'sick pleasure' in any of this. Or (almost certainly) has any vested interest.

However, yes, I tend to agree - not that it is a 'mild flu like' bug as such (it's far worse). But that the cure is worse than the disease.

The fallout from the economic restrictions will be horrific - both directly in terms of health and indirectly (but just as importantly) in terms of lost lives and livelihoods.

I'm sorry but I can't ignore some of the comments in this thread. Firstly COVID is definitely NOT a mild flu like bug. It's a very dangerous bug, fatal for some and causing serious long term side effects for many others. Secondly, to say that lockdown achieved nothing is untrue. It reduced the number of cases significantly and brought the R number down well below 1. By June we were in a very good position as a nation but we wasted it by:
1.Encouraging everyone to "eat out to help out" knowing that the virus spreads more easily indoors.
2. Having no border control so anyone could enter the country without being tested or isolated.
3. Failing to develop a proper test and trace system which would allow the infection to be properly tracked and monitored (the current system has been a massive expensive failure)
With the number of cases now rising exponentially we have no choice but to enter another lockdown, even though we will probably just go round the same circle again unless the government devises a proper plan for exiting this one.
I am devastated that outdoor tennis has been cancelled as I know it is safe and has been a lifesaver for me over the past months. But sadly like those who have died, we too are victims of this virus and the way it has been mismanaged.
